Well I am scared lol..

The shop called me, told me my G0's work is done, I brought it in last night due to my deciding to change the stock double ring tulip Klusons to the retrofit Gotoh locking tuners.

I was going to do this work myself, but after trying to remove the 1st bushing I figured I would let the tech do it lol.

I will be picking her up and 5pm, I sure they didn't kill her, she had a great setup, my old issue was with the tuners really, I mean they were reasonably stable with proper stringing techniques used.

However, I am lazy when it comes to string changes, and I do them often, every 3-4 weeks, so locking tuners is just a world easier in regards to the time it takes to throw on a fresh set of strings.

Here's hoping it goes well..

I'll post some pics when I get her home and have some time to feel her out and see how she plays now.

Cheers!

I'm looking forward to the photos and your impressions. I upgraded the tuners on my PRS Santana SE to the high end locking PRS tuners. It was a very cool upgrade (which I did myself). But I have never used locking tuners on any other of my guitars (Gibsons, Epiphones and Fenders).

Sorry for the delay, here are the before and after pics with comments following images.

Before with original tuners:

After with the Gotoh Kluson style locking tuners:

So far my impressions.

1. The tuners seem to be of equal quality to that of the double ring Klusons.
2. Tuning stability seems to be up slightly (I assume since there is less winds, this leaves less room for the strings to stretch.
3. The tuners are a perfect fit in terms of casing and leaving zero marks on the back from the original tuners.
4. As for looks, I do not think it has had an adverse effect on the guitar and still retains its historic looks.

Now for the annoying part.

I had a local tech throw these on for me, and I noticed yesterday that 4 out of 6 bushings are not seated flush to the headstock, so I will be bringing it back to him tomorrow to have the job done properly.

They look nice & that certainly is annoying. I wonder if he knew about the other 4 tuners not seating or if it's settled since it's first stringing?

Either way they sure do look nice & will definitely help with the string changes.

Whatcha gonna do with the old Klusons you had removed? :naughty:

Going to keep them, in case I ever decide to sell the guitar and either put them on or include with the guitar.

As for string changes, thats really the reason I did it, on these reissues the low E and A are really tight and touch, re-stringing is a pain and I re-string often, every 3 weeks.

This will help greatly when I feel lazy, string in, put tight and give a half turn - done...

Also these have a higher tuning ratio, so should be good.

Ill let ya know how it goes when I get the guitar back, again, lol...

Cheers!

I replaced my tuners for locking Gotoh's last week, although I also put new (whiter) buttons on as well... Gotoh unfortnately use the same snot green tips for their OEM tuners as they do with the ones they supply to Gibson for Historic's... be nice if they changed the colour.

Man, they look nice - on both guitars.
I Like the fact that the bushings are the same size as the original Klusons and the look doesn´t change because of the mod.

Come to think of it: I should have bought locking tuners too.....I put new strings on both my historics yesterday and it´s not the work I really enjoy doing. (I can see the advantages of having your own guitar tech when you´re a RockStar :) )

Why did you pick the guitar up & pay for the install, then?

I put the Gotoh lockers on my 2008 G0 and left the stock bushings. Worked fine, but there was a slight bit of wiggle room as the shafts on the Gotohs were just a tick narrower than stock. So under string tension, there was a very slight (but perceptible) forward shaft lean.

Forward shaft lean is great in golf, not so great on guitars. It's too bad they don't just fit perfectly without having to mess with the bushings, but they don't.
