So a cop pulled my son over...

and asked him if he knew why he was being pulled over. Son says no sir. Cop says his exhaust is too loud. Son says it just passed inspection and he thought it was fine. Cop gets a BIG TIME attitude and almost yells "the inspection station doesn't enforce the law, I do!" Then he notices my wife sitting in the passenger side and his demeanor changed A LOT. Cop asked politely if she was his mother and she says yes. Cop asked her if she thought it was too loud for a Dodge Dakota and she said it was a little louder than factory but not that loud. Cop said he just can't stand loud noises anymore and to him it was too loud and he expected my son to have it fixed next time he sees him in a couple of weeks and lets him go without a ticket.

We live in a small town and so he will definitely be seeing my son around again. It was after city hall closed but I plan on calling tomorrow and see if there is any measurable standard for exhaust noise or if it is just a subjective opinion. When he first got the truck he cut the muffler off and was running straight pipes. I showed him the state law saying he had to have a muffler so he got one and had it installed. My son has a Magnaflow muffler and it is far from being as loud as most of the teen vehicles around here and certainly not near as loud as a Harley. Anyway, just burned me up that the cop would pull him over for that when it's not any louder than a regular pickup with dual exhaust.

probably not as loud as my 66 pontiac with headers and duals.i owned it 25 years and never got an excessive noise ticket.but its not noise if its sweet music...

There should be a decibel level for exhaust or noise ordinance or something like that. I'd check on it - and write a letter to department if you find that his truck meets that standard...

I'm gonna have to agree with BOBBO here.. I've met TWO cool cops in my life. The rest acted like the dorks everybody picked on at school and became cops so that they could finally feel powerful. And they love to abuse it. Just my experience.

No kidding. Had one buzz past our bedroom window one night. Woke me up and scared the piss out of me. I used to drive a Mustang that was loud as hell, but loud vehicles annoy the crap out of me anymore.

That's what I don't get. It's not that loud at all. I generally don't have a problem with cops but this is more than a little ridiculous. We got a couple of new cops and from what I have heard they have real bad attitudes. I wish I would have been with him instead of my wife.

Yeah. A buddy of mine used to have this sweet F-150 Lightening with Borla exhaust. That was the best sounding exhaust I've heard on a v8... Not loud, just a real deep purr to it.
