Just for kicks, I just dug this out of the archives....

One HELLUVA show. Axl still had the fright wig hair, and Slash and Izzy were the anti rockstars. Neither of them has ever acted like the success that they were to me since then. Class guys.

I saw them open for The Cult just a few months before that (upper left):

Met Slash (Izzy was there too but really hammered) outside after the show. He was very nice to all of us. Nobody knew who they were here because AFD wasn't released until the following day in Canada. 2 years later everyone in the world knew who they were. Talked to him for 15 or 20 minutes. Pretty damn down to earth at the time.

Who the **** is Slash?

Slash (a.k.a. Saul Hudson) - a session guitarist of such bands as Velvet Revolver, Hollywood Rose and others less widely known.
Used to be a promoter of Gibson Les Paul guitar replicas but failed and doubtly decided to sign up an endorsement contract with Gibson Guitars Co. Started to learn music theory at the same time, but finally totally failed and decided to keep playing notes outside the key all the time, calling it as his signature sound.
In the beginning of 2015 finally canceled an endorsement agreement with Gibson Guitars Co because of evident difficulties connected with promoting new innovative 2015 Gibson line of products. Currently work as Jack Daniel's whiskey and Schwarzkopf haircare products endorser.

Huge Slash fan here...or was back in 1987....G and R for sure changed the landscape of bad music (to good music) that was flooding the market back then and they kicked ass....I was playing back then a lot...but honestly...it wasn't like at the time Page, or Perry etc...were so far gone you didn't equate Slash as just an extension of that era..so him playing a Les Paul (style guitar) to me at least...was pretty unremarkable.

and made sense based on the sort of style of music Guns was making.

what got me to ultimately pull the trigger on a Les Paul was a combo of Page and Chris Cornell who was not mentioned as a LP player (and for good reason...he's not really as much known as a guitarist overall) but Soundgarden was a huge band and getting bigger in 1989 when Chris switched (full time) from a Strat to a LP. He was using what looked like a silver burst in 1987 though but I've only seen black and white photos...so I am not sure the exact color of that LP.

amazing thread....I am 15 pages in and have read it all...going to pop on youtube today and enjoy some interviews and live clips etc from Slash and remember how great it all was.

On this video you can see GnR playing 'Back off bitch' for the very first time in 1985. Slash is using a Les Paul which doesn't have zebra pickups on it. Pickups are all black. So is this the Les Paul built by Max..? It should be! The one built by Derrig always had zebra pickups on it. And this video is from 1985, which means that Slash already had the Max's Les Paul when the recording session started.
You can see too the BC Rich in front of Slash's amp.

The thing is that I don't get why Slash is not telling the truth about those guitars. Cause those videos prove that he had Max's Les Paul during the recording of Appetite.
