I have non locking rotomatics on my les paul and am wondering would the locking type be a worthwhile improvement, or a waste of time for me ? I like the idea 0f 18:1 for accurate tuning, but would the locking type hold tune better than their non lock counterparts ?

Thanks for any advice

I tried both, didnt notice much difference. Also, locking tuners on a Les Paul just aren't necessary.

why would so many people take off original non lockers and fit locking types then ,surely it cant be whimsical or hype ?

I've hardly heard of anyone here doing it. My understanding is that they only make a big difference if you have a floating trem. Even my "cheapest" tuners hold tune just fine, so long as they're strung right and the nut is lubricated.

string installation is spot on and bone nut has pencil rubbed into the slots, the guitar never goes sharp and binding is never an issue. would locking tuners reduce the amount say the high e string can go flat after hard bending and vibrato in the upper frets area ?

That's exactly why. They fall for the hype and marketing. NOBODY needs locking tuners on a Les Paul period. If you wind the strings correctly, and stretch them like your supposed to, there are ZERO tuning issues with non-locking tuners. You see Slash, Jimmy Page, Bonnamassa, Zakk with locking tuners?

I know how to put strings on a guitar I just like locking tuners. These are a direct fit on some Les Pauls.

Slash,Jimmy Page, Bonnamassa and Zakk have guitar techs, I don't. I like how I can change a string real fast at a gig and I don't need a string winder and yes I'm a string breaker "SIGH"

FWIW, my Standard ( aka Poor mans Jimmy Page Guitar ) looks just like Jimmys from the front. :dude:

Have them on my 68RI also.:)

Yes, cause it takes sooo long to change a string on a non-locking tuner.

I've never tried them but my understanding is you could drop a new string on and tune up in around 30 seconds or less, stood up, between songs.

you can do the same with a non-locking tuner my man. Requires a few extra turns but hell, whatever floats your boat.

If you think locking tuners are better on a Les Paul,

You're dead wrong! Bring It!

Not sure why joe is so passionate against them. It's a personal preference. I installed them on my LP, not for tuning stability, but for ease of restringing. None of my strings have a complete wind around the post. I absolutely love them. Do I need them? No.

My only issue with them is they don't make the locking rotomatics in a nickel finish.

I string my LP with 11-49 d`addario and i have powerful hands ,anything less than 11s are way too light for me and feellike rubberbands. I bend aggressively and my gtr never goes sharp as strings are properly put on, nut lubricated and strings get well stretched in. Sometimes id bend high e string around 19th fret or so and that string will go a bit flat, sometimes on b string too, thats why I was thinking would locking units lessen this ? doesnt happen all the time ,but if i can get it a minimum......ya know what i mean

thoughts ?

Bottom line, locking tuners get you lack of wraps around the post. Those wraps can store string friction, and the string friction can equalize at an inopportune time, like when bending a string.

YMMV, but I can change a broken "e" string with locking tuners on-the-fly a helluva lot faster than I can with the stock Klusons.

This is why I like the Rotogrips. Has nothing to do with locking the string to pitch for me.

Slip the string through the tuner head, twist the knob, clip the string, tune.

They're wonderful. :thumb:

When a string pops at a gig, every second counts when changing a string...
