It seems to me that this is only the beginning. The great purge is on! Banning and burning books is all the rage. It used to be the fringe that called for bans. Now it is the mainstream, it is encouraged, and even perceived as a good thing. And it will get worse. Way worse.

Having been born in Scotland, some of the first books I was exposed to were the "Noddy" series. They are off the dial in terms of modern culture.

A couple years ago I bought an original edition of the first book for my grandson who lives in CA. Subsequent editions have been scrubbed. He's just six years old and goes to a private school. I jokingly suggested to my daughter she let him take it to school for show & tell. We would probably be reading about it in the news!

lately i’ve been thinking maybe it was a good thing i didn’t go into showbiz because there’s a good chance i would have gotten caught on the wrong side of this “cancel culture” crap

I read Dr Seuss as a kid. My kids enjoy the stories as well. I don't remember anything too bad in them. But I haven't heard of any of the 6 books listed.

Sort of made me think maybe this is kind of like Disney removing Song of the South from their catalogue. Times were different back then and some of the old stuff is kind of racist in today's context:dunno:

I worked at a Sambo's restaurant back in high school. When I was little I had the book that told the story depicted on the walls of those restaurants. Long ago those restaurants were shutdown and I've not seen or even heard of the books since. And I thought those told a story of a child outsmarting tigers.

But I get it, and I do want everyone to feel they belong.

Am I the only one that doesn't think this was entirely unwarranted? I mean, according to the article, one of the books refers to Asian people as "slant eyed people from countries no one can spell". It's not the most offensive thing I ever heard in my life, but probably not something I would read to my kid at bed time. :dunno:

fuck it.

I don't care anymore.

Let the word eat itself.

:io:

tbh i kinda envy anyone born between ‘40-‘70 because y’all got the best years in a lot of stuff like showbiz and cars (imagine being 19 in ‘69 and getting a Yenko Camaro off the lot and throwing your 60 LP in the backseat!!) and you’re old enough now not to really care about any of this bullshit

the rest of us have to watch in horror at what our next 30-50 years are gonna be like
