Hi everyone!

So,today I went to the local store, and I played the gibson sg standard and 61 ressuie, and the standard sounded better, also the neck was better, its like the 61 has slimmer and wider neck, and the standard has 59's neck
I'll mention that the 61RI had an OK setup and dead rust strings, but the standard has new string with OK setup, could it be because of the strings?
The standard sounded much more open and clearly, and the 61RI sounded like its into a box, less clearly

why is that ?I thought the 61 is better..:hmm:

Just remember not all guitars are created equal. Some are made perfectly, some are made with flaws. That could be one of the problems you had. Also the strings will do that for you.

Another reminder that there is no better.
If there were, there would only be one choice.
Even if both guitars were set up the same way with new strings, 10 out of 10 people would not choose the same guitar.

Personally I prefer the 61RI, but for the same reasons you prefer the standard, so its all up to taste. Both are equal in quality IMO.

While there are a number of differences, the most obvious would be the neck size (thin on the 61 and fatter on the standard), and the pickups (57's on the 61, and hotter 498T/490R on the standard), and of course the small vs large pickguard.

When I was in the market for an SG a few months ago I went through the same thing...
The 61 or the Standard. I liked the Standard more.

Both are excellent guitars. Both are Gibson USA models.
Neither is Better than the other.

Set up is very important. If the 61 was set badly then you didn't really have a fair comparison. It's a Sweet guitar.

The Standard was priced at $1649 and was dropped to $1199 a few months ago
The 61RI is at $1999 (you can pick them up for less)

You won't be disappointed with either choice. So it's a win win.

A little more green in your pocket if you choose the Standard. :)

I agree.

Just for kicks, do a "blind" test.

Have em' both strung with fresh strings and set up, and play em' blindfolded.

That would be the best test, as YOU wouldn't have any pre-determined judgement.

Better is just an opinion of someone as an individual when it comes to this.
The 61 is more expensive but I would not say better.Different,yes.
I own a standard and I love it.I had enough $ to but the 61 but I preferred the standard for personal reasons, neck, neck joint. Some like the 61 for the same reasons and some just THINK its better because it costs more and is supposed to be more like the vintage guitars. Its a mind F*ck really.i would just get what you like better for your own personal taste and pay no attention to what cost more or is better in some one elses opinion

if that 61 didnt sound good, then that would be the first...lol
could be as simple as a pup hight adjustment

but realize in the SG world, you're comparing apples to oranges

...IMO

Given a choice of only two guitars, how could all ten choose different guitars?

Actually, he's right.

10 out of 10 would not choose the same guitar.

(I'm drinking, but I still think he's right)

Burp.
