I recently bought what I believe to be a 1968 or a 1969 SG Jr. The pots read 1376850 which line up for a ‘68. However the serial number comes back to a ‘69. It reads 809706. My biggest issue is the serial number is ink stamped. I thought starting in early 60’s all of the solid body got the indentated serial numbers? The control cavity also has a brass plate inside that matches that of a late ‘69 early ‘70 SG.

Everything leads to it being a ‘69.With pots made in the 50th week of ‘68 it’s very possible they just got used in ‘69. However my main concern is the ink stamp serial number.

Any help is appreciated!

Welcome! Would love to see some pics! I too have a SG, LP and Marshall fetish LOL..though I'm rocking a V these days..through a '74 JMP Super Bass.

'69. Though I could tell that by the heel of the neck joint. It's not really ink stamped..just a light strike with cherry (or walnut, which is an AUTOMATIC 1969 date) pooled into the strike making it look inked..

Probably later into '69 than you'd think..usually a 4-8 week lead time between the date stamped on the pot and the time it took Gibson to receive, test, put into inventory, then assemble into guitar..sometimes longer than that! They'd have to do all of that in 2 weeks to make it a '68..and that just didn't happen.

I believe the big difference between 68 and 69 besides the heel is a 3 piece neck.
