Hello, I have recently go into a bit of money and I have decided I'am going to go for a Gibson SG Standard.
The new one ( https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/190319340838008--gibson-sg-standard-heritage-cherry )
ticks all the right boxes for what I'd want in an SG.
Batwing pick guard, chunky rounded neck,490 pickups and the cherry red finish.
So my question is do people who know about or own one of these guitars think advise me to go through with this?

Why aren't you considering the 2018 or prior models...?

They have 61 Alnico Vs versus 490 Alnico II pickups, and use the small pick guard versus the batwing. To me, much more desirable and classy.

Also, probably can find 2018 new, or as new, on sale.

Might be down to neck shape. 2018 has slim taper versus the modern rounded.

Food for thought - you asked for it.

Yes that is the reason I am not going for earlier than 2018 models. I have a Les Paul studio with a slim taper neck and so I wanted another Gibson with a thicker neck for a different feel.

Fair enough. I prefer batwings in ebony, but cherry is the classic look. So long as you get a good quality one, with great fit n' finish, good 'pleck' job, and nice fingerboard, I'd say you are all set! Good luck!

I like my 18 Dark cherry burst. But i love slim tapers and 57s
I believe the 2018 Standards use the 61R/61T pups

Like your Blueberry Burst in your avitar pic. Have been drooling for one for awhile. :)

My advice is buy used. You can buy two used for the price of a new one.
Agree, except he wants the Modern Rounded C profile neck. Earlier models, at least recent decade, are Slim Taper.

AFAIK, they've made the large pickguard SG Standard with the rounded 50's profile for many years, it's just that the '61 small pickguard model gets more attention here. I have a '92 SG Standard (limited Blue Metallic finish and nickel hardware, '59 rounded profile), and I think they've continued to make that model most years at least since then (not that finish, though).

The 2016 SG Standard does not have a Slim Taper neck.

There are awesome used deals on the older batwing models. I urge you not to purchase new. There are deals to be had and think of what you could do with that savings.

Round profiles:

2016 Standard
2012 Standard
2011 -1999 Standards
And SG Faded

Over the last two decades (at least), most all SG Standards and SG Faded with the larger batwing pickguard have the round neck profile. The newer SG Standards from 2013 - 2015 and 2017 - 2018 have the Slim-Taper profile.

The ones with the slim taper profile are the '61 SG Standards, with the small pickguard, any large pickguard models have the rounded 50's neck profile AFAIK.

yes, and funny you should say that. There was a pre owned 2016 for sale for £1000 at my local store, only thing that stopped me buying it was that it was in black and not red cherry. Every other box was ticked. Hopefully a red cherry rounded SG comes up on the used market.

Where in the UK are you? I have a 2016 Standard in Heritage Cherry for sale. They came with a gig bag that year but I'm selling mine with a Gator case.

I own a few SG Standards both newer and older, I think they are made very well these days. There’s lots of advice about buying used and that is good advice unless you really want new.

My favorite SGs I actually own aren’t regular Standards, they’re a Derek Trucks model and an SGS-3 in black with gold hardware.

And this would be a huge want for me to acquire. This Purple SG. Beautifully gorgeous.

Dang, love that purple one!

Both of my current Gibson SGs were bought new, but at substantial discounts. Sometimes the heart wants what it wants :)
