MIM Used is the way to go. See if you can hear a difference:

All MIM necks are actually made in the Corona, CA factory and trucked to Encinada for assembly. Major differences are
that MIM guitars have more body pieces and lower grade hardware and electronics, but MIM's are roadworthy tools that deliver the most bang for the buck IMHO.

The wood is local wood. Bodies aren't shipped.
But pickups and necks are.

I was dead set on buying a MIA white strat this year. I went to GC and played what they had. I was highly disappointed in how the fret ends were finished on the ones in stock. The guy working tried to play it off like it wasn't that bad. The frets on my kid's mini Squier are finished perfect, I expect the same on a MIA strat.

I ended up a used MIM that has a very nice neck. I don't care about the number of body pieces on a solid finish so that's not a big deal. I don't use the trem, and it's not set floating, so tuning isn't an issue. The big differences are the MIM's have ceramic pots and a cheaper trem block. I can't hear the differences in trem blocks so who cares. I will be changing the pup to custom 69's with a SD SSL-5 bridge eventually. But I would probably do the same on a stock MIA anyway.

I do have a problem buying a guitar for myself that says Squier on the headstock. I know it's shallow and doesn't matter, but it is what it is. My loss I guess.

It all comes down to individual guitars I'd say really.
I have a Squier Classic Vibe strat that I prefer over any mim I'veplayed short of road Worns, and my new Am Standard is just fantastic. I can only hope I hope I find a mim I really bond with at a great price. I'll be checking out a classic player 50's and a Jimmie Vaughn. Woo!!

The MIM. Some people like the Squier Classic Vibe series (I don't) and would make the argument about buying one of those over a MIM. Depending on what you like/want I can see their argument. But between a MIM Standard and a Squier Standard? The MIM all day, every day.

You guys should have been over at Strat-Talk the last few days. Someone started a MIA vs. MIM thread that ended up being quite the argument (well as far as Strat-Talk goes...that level of argument wouldn't even raise eyebrows here).

Some fool was claiming that tone is not in the hands and that pros/big names play the best gear (ie. MIAs) because it is inherently better. I argued that tone is, indeed, in the hands and proceeded to provide examples A) of well known players making that argument and B) of well known players playing Squiers (including SRV) and argued that they would still sound like themselves.

The someone else, whose reading comprehension skills really need improving, got all uppity because apparently I was saying that the Squiers I own were better than the Fender American Deluxe. The funniest thing about his claims is that I do not own any Squiers, nor would I as I simply do not like them.

I've given up on the thread but the argument is still going on

When I watch vids comparing the two it seems everyone is comparing new MIAs (floating trems on strats, 6 saddle bridges on teles, body contours on teles, etc.) and siting those as reasons why they're "better". I also own a USA Select Strat and I consider my MIM just as nice quality wise. Many old MIA Strats use 6 point trems just like my MIM FSR Strat, yet now it's looked at as if the MIM are inferior because of that, even though it was the "standard" at one time for the MIA line. Confusing...

So are MIM Fenders now basically up to the spec of older MIA, or am I off base?

i'm not sure when did fender start using floating tremolo, but I think they've been using it for their MIA strats for a while. So, I think you can find any strat with floating trem that can be considered as "old strat"

indeed, hands down to the floating tremolo. :D..

personally I wont put MIA vs MIM into side by side comparison for their quality. Since I believe they have similar quality control system.

anyway, the MIM has only 21 frets..this is my biggest concern

Oh yes, I DO need the 22nd fret :D

What a small world. That was me.

Why do you feel the need to call me a fool? Especially in light of the fact that I conceded you had some very valid points and that my position has changed in response to same.

Just wondering why the need for the name-calling?

Because it was a foolish thing to say.

If that is the case my apologies as I don't remember seeing a post to that effect.

In the MIA vs. MIM debate, has anyone answered the following question: Is the body wood superior on the MIA, either because it has a better tap tone, or the grain is better looking? Is that worth over $1000? The answer is definitely yes to guys who can afford Fender Custom Shop guitars retailing for over $4000. These buyers also fall into the category of collectors who pay a premium for Gibson Custom Shop or Historic reissues. But, regular factory MIA guitars are a toss-up now, as they are feeling pressure from the bottom and the top. As a guy who buys guitars in all three categories, I don't feel ashamed about owning MIMs or MICs, because they meet or exceed my expectations for the price paid. I am actually disappointed by some of the stuff in the middle, as they don't seem to have a unique or captivating tone.

Well, I just picked up a used MIM 5 string Jazz Bass on eBay for a really good price so now I'll be able to give you first hand opinions on the MIM stuff. Can't wait to get it. Sunburst finish with a tortoise pickguard. Just what I was looking for.

But since you can't tell an alder strat from a ash one, that argument holds nothing.

People are talking about the Mex necks being made in Corona so in essence identical but they are not the same as the USA versions are they?

The US standard has a bi-flex trussrod and micro-tilt so surely not comparable to the Mex standard?

Do they make necks in Mexico?
