My strings rust really fast specially on the acoustic they only last 1-4 days a week tops I tried buying coated strings for the acoustic and they lasted about 2 weeks max, my electric too when I play for like 2 hours they start to get some black spots before playing I clean my hands all the time but this keeps happening no matter if I peel off my skin washing it.. Please help.

I read somewhere that tomatoes can cause this

Acid in your sweat.

Everyone's sweat is a bit different. Possibly also something you eat.

I can't use Diaddario strings because I kill them and turn them black within a couple hours of using them.

But Ernie Balls don't give me that problem.

And that happened suddenly, so suddenly I wondered if Diaddario strings had changed their makeup or something. I'd been using D's for many, many years but had to switch a couple years ago to EB's.

I mean literally within a couple hours I'd wear the coating off and they'd turn black.

Check your diet, or try other brands of strings would be my suggestion.

I can relate to you I tried Adarrios and Martins and they rust within an hour the EarnieBalls last around 3-4 days at least.. Thanks for the quick response.

Drink more water... If you're that acidic or basic something ain't right.

Drink at least gallon a day...

Hell you'll probably even feel better.

Where do you live?

Humid climate aggravates it.
When I lived in Houston, Texas I had the same trouble.

1. Look for strings with the highest nickel content you can find.
2. Wipe your guitar down with a dry cotton cloth after playing.

I don't think water is the problem I drink lots of water but I'll start drinking like 5 gallons per day

I live in New York could this be the problem?

Any high nickel content strings you recommend and you really got a good point about the nickel content because this mostly happens with Bronze strings o_O

I use D'addarios for the most part... sometimes I'll swap 'em out for something different, just to see if I like something else better.

I have to leave a set of strings on a guitar for months if I wish to see to see them turn sooty like that... but because I have noticed that their tone goes flat in about two weeks or so-- and this, without regard to their external appearance-- I change them out far more regularly than that.

ETA: I live in Florida, which is a humid sort of place for the most part.

Not so much of a problem now that I live in the desert.... :applause:

Nah - any brand offers something with nickel.
I was using Gibson Vintage and D'addario EXL-110s last time I bought a bunch.

Might have to shop around a little - some stores don't carry them.
Buy a few different brands and see how you like them.

Look at where the nickel actually is used.
Is it a coating?
Is the wrap wire nickel?
Is the core wire nickel?

Try to compare apples to apples.
