20 years ago today the world lost Rory Gallagher. One of the greats in my book, and my favourite slide player, bar none.

I have tried until I am blue in the face to get videos to embed (yes, I know about removing the 's' from the URL, but for some inexplicable reason I am always unable to do this successfully in threads that I start), so I will leave it up to you to add something.

Yes, Rory was definatly one of the greatest and I have great memories of seeing him several times in the 80's (inspirational).

Despite him being the first musician (I think) to bring a Strat to Ireland and renouned for his Strat, I think a pic of him with a Les PAul fits better here :naughty:

And a few pics of him together with other great Irish musicians who are no longer with us:

We miss all of them :(

His slide style is correctly "primitive" and raw (I mean this in a very complementary way). On the acoustic especially, you can shut your eyes and easily believe you are listening to an old black Delta Blues master plying his craft.

It never works on the first post ;)

It's a bug in the Software, but Alex prefers to refer to it as a feature :laugh2:

The thing with Rory is, like many great guitarists, he is very versatile. But unlike other guitarists, he is so fluent in so many different styles, you could easily believe that was the only style of music he played. You just can't pin him down to one style as he excels at so many.

A truly underrated player. So that's that. Today is a Rory Gallagher day.

I first saw him on TV on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert.
Coolest guitarist I ever seen.
Went and bought 'Against The Grain.'
Asked for a flannel shirt that Christmas. No lie.

Irish Tour 74 was always my favorite Rory album because it sounded so "primitive" as stated above or organic. Wish I had been able to see him live. Loved that version of Walk on Hot Coals on that album. RIP

Saw him many, many times. Dogged him around London in the very early 70's in places like the Dagenham Round House, a small, ****ty but intimate venue. Rory was highly charged, electric in every respect but also a hugely affable and modest man. Biggest influence on me for a long time.

If you have a little spare time watch this rockumentary of the '74 Irish tour.

My mate went to see him several times and always used to tell me of how Rory would always come outside and talk to his fans gathered outside and autograph programmes etc. I never got to see him sadly and always look back on the missed opportunities curse myself for it. Can't believe its been 20 years already. R.I.P. (alternatively - Rock In Paradises).

When I think of sheer raw talent & energy on a Strat..............my mind always goes to two players, Rory & SRV. Also Hendrix but Rory & SRV were just powerful players IMHO.

Rory was just a great musician.............looking at his flannelette shirts, he was just an honest musician who loved playing Guitar. No tickets on Rory, just great music.

:wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :thumb: :applause: :applause:
