Damn that sucks... The Cars tape was always front and centre on our surfing trips down south back in the day and still have it on mp3. The news bulletin I heard today said natural causes which could mean any number of things I s'pose. Had no idea he was 75 would have thought mid 60's maybe. Thanks for the music & the memories Ric and Co.

I watched this interview with the whole band a couple of months ago from 2000 shortly before Ben Orr passed away. All very cool fella's.

I was lucky enough to meet him a few times and even go to his house in Brookline MA. He was a very down to earth relatable guy, not caught up in his rock star persona at all. Great songwriter too.

Rest in peace Ric, you lived the dream.

I was 15 when their album dropped. Lots of great memories of that summer.

Heartbeat City, Candy-O and Shake It Up. I think I might have Panorama and the Greatest Hits too.

Seems like everybody is surprised at his age. I would’ve never guessed. That means he was well into his 30s when the band broke, pretty unusual. I love a bunch of their stuff, I have often said that the debut could almost be re-titled “greatest hits“. RIP

I worked at the Wherehouse records when the first two LPs we're released and they got heavy rotation on the playlist when I was at work. I was the only rock/country guy and we had several people who were heavily into disco so I was always butting heads with my fellow employees when it came to what was and what was not being played in the store.

Loved the Vargas art on Candy-O.

Miss those days.

There was a Cars compilation that was released back in '95. The liner notes began like this:

"During the late 70's and early 80's, most rock fans were split into two camps, with hardly any common ground. Either you listened to "punk" bands like The Clash, Talking Heads, and The Cars, or you were into "mainstream" bands like Aerosmith, Queen and The Cars."

I always thought it was a great way of describing the band's impact.
