I have a 1999 Epi Lp. Every time i plug it in it sounds muffled and no balls what's so ever. Im thinking about giving RS Guitar Works a shot. Any ideas? Are they good?

RS Guitarworks is a reputable place, they sell good products...kinda salty on shipping. Their prewired assemblies are CLEAN.

Muffled and no "balls"...what kind of amplifier are you plugging into, and settings?

I use Martinsixstring cutoms harnesses. Very fast delivery. Usually 3 days and they are the cleanest I have ever seen. Also replace the switch while you are at it.

I'm humbled :) Thanks!

But yes, do replace the switch. They are notorious for failure.

What pick ups did you put in?
What height are they at?

I don't think a new harness will give your guitar any balls unless your present one has an actual problem. Clarity and more usable taper of the controls, yes.

That said, I've used RS and MSSC. Both top quality. I prefer the MSSC pots' taper to the RS pots.

Have you ever put wax on top of the pickups? A friend did this and killed his pups. Especially if you have the covers on and the wax got down in the screw holes.

Getting like liquid car wax down in the pickup. Some types tend to kill the pups because of whatever's in it. You tend to get the muffled sound from them after that happens.

Try adjusting the pickup height.

Start at about 1/16" from the strings with the last fret fretted. As mentioned above, I don't think the wiring is going to work miracles.

I had a RS Guitarworks Premium Modern kit in a Elitist and was very impressed; really opened up the WCR pickups I had in it.The slightest change in the volume and tone controls had noticeable effect which gave the guitar much more tonal options.I've got a another guitar on order and plan to add another RS kit to it.They made a believer outta me.

Why take it to a tech? It's a very simple thing to adjust the height of the pups. Besides...you're going to have to play with it to get them to sound the way you want them to.

That is true, i just figured since i didnt know how to do it, i would take it to a tech.

It only requires a phillips screwdriver and a simple up down adjustment - this if from the Lawrence Pickup site. Wiring & Tech Info

You can do this... :D "no fears dude!!!" :slash:

Here is the section:

The distance between the pickup and string is a very important factor for output and sound.

As a general rule for the bridge pickup - put a nickel on top of the pickup under the high E string and play the highest note on that string. Adjust the height on that side of the pickup till the string touches the nickel. Repeat the same with the low E string, but use two nickels on top of each other. If this gives you too much output, you can reduce the height slightly. Don't forget that twice the distance will reduce the output by about 60%, and the sound will lose some lows. NOW, you can adjust the neck pickup to match the output of the bridge pickup. For the sound test, use stage volume.

Anyone know where this is?

I went looking for it this morning to post a link here and I can't find it. I don't remember if it was here or at LPF, but it was all about poll screw and pickup height, finding the sweet spot, note bloom, and such things. It was a very extensive (almost) step-by-step and was quite a popular thread a year or two ago. Anyone got the link saved? Google has failed me.
