Hi all,

As the title states, I'm refinishing a stripped '76 LP Standard and the decal that bore the serial number is long gone. I was hoping someone might know of a spot where I could have a repro made? I've included a couple of reference photos. Thanks! :)

Well, I am in the same boat as you are. I contacted Gibson Restoration and sent them an e-mail inquiring about mine. Don't try and go to their site to send a message as I tried that and the send button would not send the message. As soon as I get word from Gibson Restoration if they do/can/will sell them, I will let you know! Or you can send a message to repair@gibson.com

Well, I got a reply back from Dion at Gibson Repair. They told me they only stamp numbers now and any decals had not been made since 1976. He asked I send him pictures of my guitar so I did along with the link here on the forum of my restoration process and I will see what he says on his return e-mail to me.

If they can't do it I guess I am pretty much SOL. If you haven't refinished your guitar, you may be able to tape over the serial number to keep it real.

Very good. Again, keep me posted. There may be another way.

Well I got a reply back from Dion at Gibson Repair and Restoration and basically he told me for $2,750 They will put a new wing on, refinish the guitar and bring it back to it's original condition with serial number and pickguard! Can you believe that?

I replied back to him that I was just inquiring about the serial number and of course if I could get a lower wing would be cool, but told him I was doing the guitar myself and IF I had almost $3 grand laying around I can get another Bicentenniel Firebird with no issues for that price and I can make a lower wing with no problem, pickguard I will figure out.

Of course I had not gotten a response back from him which means that they are not going to work with, or assist, or give me any direction unless I send it to them for total restoration which would mean them putting on a new lower wing, the waterslide decal serial number, and pickguard as well!

I assume they probably wouldn't put a decal on, but stamp the serial like they currently do. Regardless, I'm still working on getting this done.

Well, when you find someone please make sure you share the wealth! I definitely don't want to stamp the back of the headstock!

If I find any answers before you, I will let you know!

There are some custom waterslide makers on the net that do good and whatnot. I don't have any links saved anymore but if you google repro waterslide decal maker you should get some good hits.

Alternatively if you know anyone that still has an Alps printer and a stash of metallic ribbon they can knock one out for you on model inkjet waterslide decals from the hobby store.

Exactly. Get a scan or good photo of what you want and get a print shop or decal place to do a custom run of a couple.
