I'm in the process of refinishing a LP copy with a Quilt veneer top and mahogany back. I've removed the Poly from the back and am down to the Sanding Sealer, and in a few small spots down to raw wood. Do I need to go down to bare wood for all, or can I just go over the spots where I went to raw?

Also, I plan on dyeing it before clear goes on. Can I use an oil based dye over the sealer then clear coats? If not...what the best option.

Thank you in advance, and to all the talented folks here which I've absorbed a wealth of information from.

I'm documenting the process, so once finished I'll post the whole story.

HCB, If the finish was catalyzed Poly, chances are the sealer is also catalyzed
poly. If thats the case then i doubt oil based dye will adhere to the poly sealer. You can however spray tinted clear over the poly. Lacquer will stick to it. So if you have a compressor and a spray gun you give that a try.if that dose not work then seeing how you had already sanded through in a few spots your best bet is to continue sanding until all of the poly sealer is gone and start from there. You'll be better off in the long run with much less headaches.

Another thing I would watch out for is sanding through the sealer on the top. Chances are its either a "Photo" Quilt or a very paper thin veener. Either way you WILL sand through no matter how careful you are.

Thats my 2 cents worth. I'm sure other guys will chime in as well

Thanks for your reply Lou.
I think you are right about the poly sealer. I'll try a few different things and see which works the best.
Cheers.
