For years I've been whining about the '79 JMP 2203 I sold close to 20 years ago. Yesterday, I redeemed myself. Drove two hours to Reno to pick up a '79 JMP 2204 50w.

I've been looking at 2203's but I really wanted a 50w this time. It's well maintained and sounds amazing. No modification holes drilled in the chassis. Someone painted over the white piping on the headbox, but I can peel it off with my fingernail. The head box itself isn't in bad shape either though it is missing one of the corners.

Pis are from the seller. He insisted on selling it with an unbranded 4x12 that has Pyle Driver speakers. It might be an Avatar.

I am curious to hear how you like it, especially versus the old 2203.
So far I love it. But I have only played it though the 4x12 the seller gave me with Pyle Driver speakers. (I hear Derek Trucks likes Pyle Driver speakers? Any way, As soon as I played it I knew it was special. Surprised at how much gain it has when I dime the pre-amp.

It'd be hard to compare as I haven't had the 2203 in a very long time and that was on top of an Hughes & Kettner 4x12 with Eminence speakers, IIRC. If it's anything like my JCM800 2204, it's going to sound very different with different speakers.

I was able to clean off some of the paint on the piping.

This amp rings like a bell. Even the wife said: "That thing sounds really good." "It's like...clean" It's really crisp & clear...even with heavy distortion.

Tried it G12T-75's and V30's...I prefer the V30's. Strange because to my ears the JCM800 2204 sounds better with G12T-75's.

looking at one, too. If I hadn't gotten the JCM2000 DSL50, I'd have bought it already. Now I need another cab, lol. I still want another cab, I want a full stack, so I'll need 3 more cabs to have two full stacks.

I now have four 4x12's, four 2x12's and two 1x10's. So I guess I have two full stacks, two 3/4 stacks and the little Lead 12 mini stack....

Nice, congratulations!

Nice to find something from your past that fills a void.

If you see Gina Cimino from my past, tell her I’m looking for her.

Love playing my LP's though this amp but today I tried my SG Standard and came away very impressed.

So I also have this Flying V, a Special Faded. I've never gotten along with it, tone wise. The neck dives and it just sounds too "twangy" I've tried different pickups and currently have a EMG ZW set in it. Well today I played it through the JMP and it sounds incredible, it's like they were made for each other. With my Metal Muff Distortion pedal in front, it's the perfect 80's metal tone.
