I was walking through Target and saw a 1/4"' jack to a USB cable with the hardware for installing a recording program on a computer.
I says it was compatible with Vista. Since I have Windows 7 and it is basically Vista sp 2,will it work with 7 ?:hmm:

Probably. Sorry, but there are no guarantees. Line 6 had a hell of a time when Windows 7 came out. It took them months to overcome undocumented differences.

(Windows 7 is NOT just Vista sp2.)

Most USB devices are plug and play on WinXP and above, so the cable should work with whatever program you use for recording (and there are plenty for free).

Problem I've had with it is that it just doesn't sound good, especially not with my electrics.

You can just use audacity or some other software, I can't imagine it would be worse than what comes with the cable.

If you decide you want it after you do your research just PM me.

the 1/4 usb cable is made by first act. that's the only one i've ever seen at target. a friend of mine has one. he did some recordings with it, and it was really bad sounding, and had horrible latency - on a mac. now he's running his mics into a mixer, which he then runs into his pc via a 1/4 - 1/8 cable. it's cheap and it works much better and there are no latency issues. you just have to level and e.q. your drums on the mixer the best you can before recording.

EDIT - i use a similar setup for my recordings in windows xp, and there is no latency, except on listening to what's currently recording in cubase, however, the recorded sound is always fine. just turn off monitoring on your track, and you'll be fine.

+1.

I used to record via USB, and it sounded VERY...generic. Almost like I was using EMGs!

Nothing beats a DI! Probably the closest you can get to analog...without the reel-to-reel.:thumb:

You would want an audio interface. Does you computer have a Firewire port? Even if it doesn't, and audio interface would be the best way to record to your computer. I can explain it in greater detail later if you want to know. Off to work now.
