So, I usually stick to using my volume knobs on my guitar to control my gain, but would like a little bit of wiggle room and have the ability to have different tones for different songs.

I have a Ceriatone 36 watt and I'm looking for a sort of a smooth yet biting OD or boost. I will even consider a fuzz :) I know JP used a tonebender on some stuff, so if there are any good clones of it out there, let me in. I know Fulltone used to make some, but they're discontinued now.

I play classic rock type stuff (Led Zep to Humble Pie to Allman bros to AC/DC) so nothing high gain please.

I plan on having my volume set to get a good rythm crunch on the amp when my guitar volume is backed off a bit, just to have a little room to manuever, and then use the OD/boost/fuzz to get me into solo territory.

Any good recommendations or places I should look? experiences with some of the higher end boutique guys? I'm open to anything really, as long as it sounds good.

my budget is probably somewhere around $200 max.

Thanks for the help.

thanks for the suggestions guys, I'm gonna go check out the luther drive.

I want something a little more raw than the typical tubescreamer. The OCD has always intrigued me but I think it might be toooooo smooth for me :p

I'm currently checking out the Throbak Stone Bender. I'm thinking a tone bender clone may be the way to go on this one. :hmm:

The only OD/Dist pedal that I have ever liked has been the Boss Blues Driver BD-2, it just works, and is really good into a low watt tube amp.

I am more of a classic rock, 70's and early 80's metal fan so I tend to go for the JCM800 type tones.

Rangemaster would do almost exactly what you said. Dirty, a little uncontrolled with a fuzzy flavor. You can build one for about $20 or pay $150 for a clone.

I have a Ceriatone 36er as well.I also have several boosts.Fulldrive.catlinbread,Maxon etc, but believe it or not my cheap BBE freq boost pedal (modeled after the old rangmaster)just loves that amp .I play the same type of music you do as well and that pedal just works with that amp for some reason.Realy makes it scream. But when I use it with some of my other amps it sucks and gets too trebly with some amps I own.Try it out it is definately a great match with the 36er ,gives all them great AC/DC,Zep tones. Page was known to use a treble booster back in the day also.It realy hits the front end hard but doesn't compress and all the great harmonics and overtones stay intact with the 36. BBE is only $99 too .

Thanks, I'll look into that one. I just bought the stone bender used for $99, so we'll see how that works out. I dont really like pedals too much and would like to keep my setup to a minimum. So if the stonebender doesnt do it for me I'll try the BBE.

if you dont mind, could you take a look at my thread in the squawk box about my amp? http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/squawk-box/35063-18-watt-vs-36-watt.html

I'd appreciate your experience with the 36 watt.

Thanks

I feel the same about tubescreamers, tried out a load od's in the shop and ended up with a boss bluesdriver, despite it being one of the cheapest!

-I like it coz its transparent enough to let your guitar and amp have its own character but its got more edge than a tubescreamer. And its very reactive to guitar volume, and loves being next to other pedals. Sounds really good with my comp pushing it. But also sounds good on its own.

Doesn't work as well with single coils if I'm being really critical- but it loves my LP.
Definitely worth trying- but make sure its your guitar and a similar amp as it does sound very different on different rigs.

Mine is loud also .There is not much difference between 18 and 36.Just more headroom for clean sounds with 36 .It definately does not hit the sweet spot until its almost cranked.Thats where all the love is.If you want quieter 5 watts is still loud cranked but if you have micing option it is fine for gigs.

Get a Boss BD2 and modify it with the 'H2O plus' kit from monte allums website - fantastic pedal as a result.

I've got about 20 OD, boost and fuzz pedals. The BD-2 with Robert Keeley mods (and he's such a good guy he tells you how to do it on his website), very similar to the Monte modifications is the most versatile.

Cleans up really well as you roll off the volume, and can get you some real snarl, act as a clean boost, even do a reasonable fuzzy sound. Most pedals only have one setting I ever use, the BD-2 ends up doing all sorts. Absolutely fantastic.

They sound very good in stock form, but even better with a mod kit.

I can't imagine life without a Tube Screamer. But the BD-2 is much more versatile.

I gotta say my TS9 is by far the best pedal I have ever owned, but from what I hear the TS808 is the best way to get some good classic tones.

This is the truth...some amps lover certian pedals while other amps will just sound weak with the same pedal....wierd but very true
