Hello guys, Just bought this on ebay for a little under 500 as a restoration project. Im trying to figure out a few things,

1 if its a deluxe routed for humbuckers or a standard

2 If it is a real gibson or rebranded perhaps?(look at truss rod)

3 If someone tried to rout cavities for humbuckers from p90's or minis

4 The year, (i assume 1976 from the sticker on the back starting with "00")

5 If it was repainted or any other modifications

6 If the finish is at all save-able

Any info or opinions would be so greatly appreciated. I like to keep things original, but maybe a refinish? sorry for bad pics! ill take more when i get it.
Thanks so much guys!

I say 100% fake. :(

I'm not an expert though.
Please ask BEFORE you buy. I hate seeing people get screwed over by dbags.

1. Pickup routing
2. Truss rod hole
3. STICKER for serial (!!!)
4. Weird looking script

Weren't you just playing expert on the Standard/Trad topic?

There's more than a couple of red flags on this guitar.

Neither maybe?

2 If it is a real gibson or rebranded perhaps?(look at truss rod)
Does it matter?

3 If someone tried to rout cavities for humbuckers from p90's or minis
Who knows?

4 The year, (i assume 1976 from the sticker on the back starting with "00")
Good question.

5 If it was repainted or any other modifications
huh?

6 If the finish is at all save-able
You are kidding right?

Normally I would say if you bid it you'd better pay up but in this case I will instead say "RUN LIKE HELL!!

Even if that were a Gibson it couldn't even serve as firewood. That thing is trash. The seller should be paying you to take it away. Seriously, if saw that in the garbage I would leave it there.

Well, one thing's for sure. It's not even close to being a '70's Gibson. The logo alone is a clear indication of that.

Also, the gap behind the nut would indicate that it has a metric/hex-key truss rod nut, which are used on import/counterfeit Gibsons. I also see metric bridge-posts, smaller than average control holes, the body shape is completely off (cutaway), and the end of the fretboard is typical of most import (Epi)/counterfeit LPs (smaller/shorter than on Gibson LPs).

From 75 to 77 didn't Gibson use a decal for the serial?

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that is a real Gibson that has been repainted and had a fret job. Looks like somebody tried to repaint it (badly) and avoid the decal/logos etc. It may have been re-routed too but I'm feeling this one is genuine!

It could be fake, i'd have to see it in the flesh to be sure!

Edit: Gibson Logo (separate dot etc) and Les Paul Positioning also seem to be fine for the year. Same with screw holes for TRC. Stop bar position looks about right! Some work seems to have also been done on the truss rod peghead cutaway, so this is a hell of a project if you are not a pro.

Yes, they did. But, the details have to ad up, and in this case, they definitely don't.

Here's how the headstock should look, for any variation of a mid-late '70s LP:

Apart from the fact your is far better cared for and they are shot at different angles, the 'fake' is pretty close I'd say.

As i say, I'd like to see it for real. It may well be faked.

The logo from the OP is the typical mid '90s-current style.

There's just WAY too much stuff that's wrong with that thing, for me to even begin to think it may be genuine?

I suspect that there's more there than meets they eye, and hopefully the OP can provide some better, more detailed pics, once the guitar is in-hand?

perhaps it's a re-labled Epiphone from the 70's?

didn't people used to do that with those or other MIJ single cuts, since some were made with the same headstock as a real Gibson?

all the other issues aside, those metric bridge posts are enough to give me pause as to the legitimacy of that being a genuine Gibson.

OP says he paid "a little under 500" without specifying a currency. My opinion is that unless that is Indian Rupees he's been had.

PS, add wonky control knobs to the list of "wrong!"

The wings are totally too small on the OPs log.

Position of the les paul signature looks way off too. The ops signature is right next to the truss rod cover, while on the real one its about 1 cm away from it.
