This is not a thread about Ray Davies passing away. Whew.
I never understood this song in my youth. Call me naive. But I liked Ray & Dave Davies, and the Kinks, for no other reason than the songs were meaningful to me, an outsider. I always knew Ray was nuttier than a fruitcake, but back in the 60's and 70's, political correctness was not the litmus test it is today. It could be a generational thing, but I liked the kooks back in my day better than the ones today, such as Miley Cyrus. What's the difference? In one word, Talent.
You Really Got Me: The Story of the Kinks by Nick Hasted
Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy,
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola
Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walk like a woman and talk like a man
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola

In the course of this book, Kinks frontman Ray Davies comes in for quite a battering. His brother and guitarist Dave Davies says he has "vampire qualities it's like having a big sucker on you". His ex Chrissie Hynde simply calls him "a nut". Larry Page, who managed the Kinks in two different decades, concludes that "Ray was as big an arsehole in the 80s as he was in the 60s", while a former bandmate says that he's so tight he "squeaks when he walks".
