that alternate picking run is interesting that he switches the F to F# and the C to C#, the G to G#, ..,

it's definitely more a warm up pattern than a musical scale,,... but still it's interesting. Reminds me of something EVH might've done.

Without a doubt, Flying High Again is my favorite Randy Rhoads tune.

I was never really into Ozzy, but that was the one song that always made the fur stand up on my arms.
From the very first riff.

Hearing that isolated guitar track (linked in the article) reminded me of just how amazing that sounded to me as a teenager.
Not just power chords, but actual chords.

Smokin’ Marshalls.
I can smell those tubes…

I really loved that kid... Eddie gets so much more "respect", but I honestly thought that Randy was a much more melodic player. I preferred his melodic solo work to some of the noise for noise sake, Eddie stuff.

Tragic ending to what would have been a monster era with both he and Eddie.

When I was in high school, my guitar world revolved around Strats and Fender-type guitars.

I was under the mistaken impression that a Les Paul was a HUGE guitar, probably confusing it with all of the ES hollowbody guitars.

First time I ever actually played a Les Paul was four years out of high school.
It was heavy, as I expected, but I was surprised at how tiny the body was compared to what I had imagined.

Over time, I realized this was because so many of the Les Paul gods were tiny little fellas like Randy Rhoads.

That Custom looks HUGE on him.

Even my wife remarked that I should play my ES-335 on stage, because the Les Paul looked like a toy on me.

Kinda closed that circle up for me.

There are tapes on Youtube of his actual lessons he gave to students pre-Ozzy. They're mindblowing.

In one of them he plays the riff for Steal Away the Night to demonstrate some theory to his student, and he says the student can have the riff if he wants. Like it's just some throwaway thing.

In another one he said if he ever got signed and could afford it he would like to have a pair of Marshall 100w heads in stereo but that probably won't happen so he makes do with what he can afford.

Crazy.

The first time I thought an LP looked small was when I saw one hanging on Charlie Daniels during sound check in a photo in a magazine.
After that, figured it was a good sized guitar... forgot all about Charlie.

I even had an Epiphone LP in the 90s... never thought of it as big or small.

Got my first Standard, likewise.

But when I got both the R4 and the R8, something struck me about them being small.
Probably the vintage fretwire... as it was the frets and bridge that really seemed to grab my attention.
