Anyone know what the neck thickness measures on a R9 at the 1st and 12th fret ?
Trying to compare that to a 50's neck on the trads.

I'm no expert, but I would not be surprised if you end up with a range of measurements....when I was looking at R7s I asked for 1st/12th measurements on any long distance deals/dealers and the R7s ranged from below .900 1st (rare) to .950, with alot of them around .925.

However, a neck that measures as slimmer but has bigger "shoulders" can feel larger, and the shape can vary a bit on these too.

The size is all over the place. The '09 and up are generally thinner than pre '09.

Check out Marksguitarloft.com He has all the neck sizes on each guitar

Based on what I've seen on Mark's site and what I've owned, .920" is about average in my experience. In general, R7s and R8s are supposed to be thicker, however my 2007 Chambered '58 and 2003 R7 both have necks that are thinner than any of the four R9s I've owned.

Before I bought my R8, I went to Nashville's Gibson Showcase and measured a bunch of Gibson necks.
Below shows my findings.

My Lucille & LP-Studio has a 50's size neck.
My R8 has a much fatter neck, especially toward the headstock.

I have larger hands than normal and thicker guitar necks feel better and give me more control, so I was obsessed in finding the thickest Les Paul neck.

The earlier (’50s-‘60s) Les Paul necks were shaped by hand so they all varied in thickness.
The newer Les Paul necks have been manufactured by CNC machines and are consistent so all the R8, R9, 50’s & 60’s necks are the same thickness.

They are CNC cut, but the final sanding is done by hand, which is why every neck is different when completed.

I have been on factory tours and have seen videos of the final sanding processes.
They only hand sand only to remove a rough surfaces.
That’s why every modern R8, R9, 50’s & 60’s necks, I have measured, were very close to the same thickness at the 12th, 7th and 3rd frets.

Very interesting.....
I have never seen a R9 neck with a thicker neck than a R8???? :hmm:

I have many times. I had an R8 neck that was thinner than any R9 I've ever owned. I've also owned an R9 that had a bigger neck than any Historic I've ever played, period.

My R8 is a year-2002 model and it’s neck is thicker than any R9 I have ever felt.
