I have NEVER seen a SN start with an R on the headstock. And a 1992 preHistoric would start with a 2, as in 2 0007. Starting with a 9 would be either a 1989 flametop RI, a 1999 Classic or if it is 9 2007 like you say, that would be a 2002 R9. And yes it is naive to think that just because he is a dealer, he knows what he is talking about.

There are Les Pauls that have SNs that start with CR however, also CS.

Some prehistorics from the 1980-1982 period started with an 8 or 9.

The guitar has Classic '57 pups, which are alright (got them on my '61 SG) but I'm wondering what you guys think could be a better alternative? :hmm:

Any suggestions?

My 01 R9 has got "Over the Pond" pickups in it. I'm very happy with them. When I get some time I'm going to try a some magnet changes in 57 Classics and see how they sound. Got some magnets, all I need is some time.

There are a lot of great sounding pickups out there.

Yep, just finished reading through the 18 pages of the OTPG pups post.
They certainly seem to be one of the best solution out there!
(BTW, I love what you've done with you're 01 R9 mate!) :thumb:
If I decide to get a set, it seems like I could be waiting for a very long time though! :(
I hope BOBBO can find a solution to have them ship direct from the UK because I do not want to have custom fees on top! :Ohno:

1993 was the first year of the Custom Shop Historic Reissues.
Liam is correct. 1992 would be the last year of the Prehistorics.

uh,not exactly.there are several 1993 prehistorics.the exact cutoff date in 1993 is unknown.

Yes, I know what you mean. The Custom Shop got a late start that year. :thumb:
The Classic and Classic Plus were still made after the Historic Reissues
started, but I guess I was trying to emphasize that the 1992 he was
referring to would not have been a Historic Reissue R9.

Well, I did it!
I bought the Yamano!! :applause:
I got to say I love that guitar!
Great resonance, great neck (I suppose I'm lucky), great feel and stunning looks!
I want to thank everyone who pitched in, the different advices really helped me make up my mind.
Now, being a gear and tone freak (isn't everyone here?) I'll probably be looking at how I can upgrade it now! (pups, caps, pots, etc..) :hmm:

R9 rocks!! :dude:

:thumb: 01 pots and caps are pretty horrible, so you can feel very justified in doing some chanhging around. Congrats on the new guitar, that top is stunning.

It's a gorgeous guitar! I love my '01, too. I am even OK with the inlays, although perhaps one day I'll have them replaced. I would never have noticed, had it not been pointed out. Now I keep looking at them...

As far as the sound of my guitar goes... I'd love to update the electronics to get the tone controls to be responsive around the entire circumference, get the volume controls to not affect sound... but I LOVE the fully-open sound of the guitar. I presume that replacing the pots and caps won't affect this sound (while I've been playing LPs since the late 60s, I've always stayed away from the electronics cavity), but would like to know what you all think. I love the way it sounds wide open, but would like better control over the tone and volume controls...

Also, what kind of soldering irons is everyone using for working in that guitar cavity?

Well, I might not have obsessed so much on the inlays if I hadn't found out you could easily correct them! :)
I've already ordered and received a set from Retrospec and even before installing and applying the die, I think they look much better!

The guitar sounds amazing fully open too, but, like Bob and Liam, I'd like to get a finer range of action from the pots.
From what I've gathered around the forum, I should get the Superpots and CTS audio taper from RS Guitarworks.
(BTW, short or long shaft?? :naughty:)

As for the caps, I'm not sure yet.
The guitar has orange drops 715, so I could use an upgrade here.
I haven't decided which type, although PIO caps seems the more appealing option for my tastes. :)

Also, the guitar is wired "modern style" by the looks of it.
I've got to dig a pit deeper to decide if the "50's style" would be better for me.
But something intrigues me...
There is this naked ground wire coming from the neck tone pot and going somewhere...
I can't see that on the different diagrams I've found, so I have no idea what it's for??

I believe it goes to the tailpiece to ground the strings...

I think, anyway.

PS: Are you replacing the inlays yourself??? If not, who will do the work?

Thanks,

Bob

Interestingly, my inlays seem brighter and not as uniformly rounded as the ones you pictured. And they have very deep 3D figure to them. Hmmm... what's a boy to do?

Well, if you have the time and skill, it seems like it's not such a hard thing to do...
You'll find posts of people doing it themselves and explaining how they did it...

I'll probably bring mine to a luthier, ...can't be bothered.
But I will apply the die myself though.

The picture I've put show the plainest of the original inlays, some of the other inlays are nicely figured too.
But the whitish color just doesn't matched the vibe of the rest of the guitar (Murphy aged).
Not to mention the rounded corners.
I just think it's a cheap and easy upgrade that definitely improves the look of the guitar. :)

BTW, thanks for the info on the ground wire, that makes sense to me now!

9 1028?? You must be kidding...

You know what? I own the 9 1026 which is your baby's older sister. Mine is also Yamano Murphy Aged with Grovers, same COA as yours too.

What is the dye? Do they provide a solution that will alter the color of the inlays?
