Great forum guys. It's nice to find somewhere to share a common passion.

OK - I'll jump straight in and ask a question. This has been niggling away at the back of my mind for some time now. I've had a quick scan through the postings and couldn't find any previous mentions, so here goes.

I recently acquired a 2005 model R8 and am very pleased with everything about it, but, I'm a little concerned about the headstock.

For one thing, although the finish on the front face and the back is ok, the sides appear to be very badly finished. They have a dull, almost gritty finish and you can almost see the spray pattern. It's as if someone had just given it a single thin coat from a spray can.

Then there is the 'Les Paul Model' logo. It's applied on the top of the finish and there doesn't appear to be any protection over the top of it, to the extent that part of it has been scratched off - presumably whilst someone was changing a string.

Does this all sound normal, or should alarm bells be ringing?

Every other aspect of the guitar checks out and I'm convinced it's not a fake.

Thanks

Dave

Any chance it could have had a refinish done at some point?

Unless it is different from an R9 the logo should be silkscreen not a decal.

The Les Paul logo on Historics is not a decal that is finished over. It is silkscreened over the finish just as you described. That is the way they did it in the 50's.

I don't think so. There are no obvious signs of damage/cracks etc. anywhere on the guitar aside fron the odd chip/scratch here and there.

Ah.... thanks guys. I'll rest easy now!

Presumably then there will be an awful lot of 50s LP's where the logo is almost completely rubbed off?

Yes. Plenty of vintage LP's have some or nearly all the logo rubbed off. You need to take care when polishing the headstock face.

BTW, welcome to the forum.:D
