one of my friends wants to buy one of the guitars i made.....

only selling cuz i am friends with him....

i originally dyed the top green and black on the flamed maple...

the lacquer is already beginning to crack... (hairline cracks deep not on the surface....)

how hard would it be to sand back the top and re dye the top red?

anyone ever try this?

IT would be pretty straight forward. Strip top, re-dye top, refinish top. What are your main concerns?

Have done it several times with no issue. The only concern would be on a veneer top like an EPI; careful not to sand through. Solid top LP, no issue whatsoever.

Good luck!

Easier would be to strip the lacquer with acetone and a plastic scrub pad, don't sand. That avoids the need to re-stain.

it would give me a chance to fix some of the bleed onto the binding, and some of the not great finishing on the headstock....

I would sell that as is Scott. Its your first build......and given I watched on the whole process I'd be disappointed to see it in other than its original guise. I look back on the first 54RI BB in the same way. Sure, there are plenty of things 'wrong', but they remind me of the lessons I learned....mainly never to do a 7ply bound guitar again.

Perhaps the new build for a friend is better.

For one you are not getting rid of an old friend, but 2 you can do the new build to what your friend wants.
