Question about the VOS aged white finish on the '68 Les Paul Custom reissue

I'm working out the details on getting a '68 Les Paul Custom reissue VOS in aged white and I have a question about the finish. I finally got to try a new white one and the finish was not like any of the other VOS finishes I've played. It was sort of matte and satiny and not at all sticky like the other VOS finishes on the ebony Les Pauls I've seen before. I know that the VOS finish on the ebony ones can be polished off leaving a nice glossy finish. Has anyone done the same with the aged white finish? If so, how did it look?

Thanks!

White (nitro) guitars are always a bit tricky. They "stain" easily, and have to be built up, which leaves them a bit thicker than a burst finish in many cases, especially around the neck joint. They look really cool, but will behave a little different than a normal sunburst. I recently saw a white 68 custom that looked killer...good luck! :dude:

Mine came glossy. I don't know how rare that is for Classic White. I guess I'll have to snap some sunshine pics! :laugh2::laugh2:

Another thing. Mine has the strongest nitro smell of all my guitars. It smells quite a bit different than a burst. I've been leaving it out of the case, because if you sniff it too much you'd probably catch a buzz. :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:

+1, and what would be recommended to polish the finish out?

Mine came with the dulled VOS finish like the one you played.

They're KILLER guitars by the way.........

Thanks for the replies. :thumb:

Yes, it was a killer guitar!

Would Virtuoso do the trick for the finish?

Hey Bole, it's not uncommon for white finishes to smell more than others. Applying a white nitro finish is not an easy task as it takes more grain filler, base primer and then color coat(s) and clear to make it look right. I've heard of some white guitars that never would cure and had to be sent back to Gibson as the white/clear coat could get permanently stained if you left it on a guitar stand too long. I had a white Flying V and I wish I still had her, something about white guitars. Nice Axe!
