I've been thinking about swapping the stock tuners in my studio LP with some locking tuners of some sort. I'm wondering about the screw holes on the back side of the headstock, and which, if any, locking tuners available are sized to be identical to what would be found on a stock LP.

The stock studio tuners are Gibson Deluxe. Is there a brand or type of locking tuner which is designed to enable a simple "pull and plug" replacement without having the drill new holes?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure the OP knows about google, but asked the question in this forum in the hope that somebody here has already crossed this bridge and could save him the trouble.

If I knew of any, I'd have been glad to answer his question directly. I just did a quick Google search and found these: Grover Locking Rotomatic tuners. Apparantly they drop right in, hope that helps OP!

I installed the TPKB3 tuners on my studio to replace the snot green ones that came on it and they fit right in, no drilling required, and used the original screw holes. If you don't like the look of the little knob things that are on top I highly recommend the non locking ones. I just stretch the strings a little and I've never had them go out of tune. And they're very smooth, easy turning tuners.

I replaced the Gibson Deluxe tuners on my Studio with Sperzel Trim-Lok tuners. They fit right into the holes in the headstock, no reaming required, and although the Sperzel's have only one screw, it lined up perfectly with one of the existing holes. It was an easy swap and I'm really happy with them.

Thanks for the responses. Between having a little difficulty keeping in tune, and a slightly bent G string tuning knob, I'm hoping a switch will fix my issues. I've got a little graphite in the nut slots to help with any possible binding, and overall it's a great guitar, I've just had some irritating tuning issues since owning it.

Planet waves will screw in the same hole (hehe) that your stockers give and they automatically cut your string for ya too. Theyre pretty sweet if they made em with tulip ends i be all over em, alas they are kidney bean shaped

I tried a set of those GOTOH locking tuners on my LP first because I was trying to preserve the look of the originals. I didn't care for them. They worked OK, but compared to even the stock non-locking tuners they seemed cheap. They had some wiggle in the shafts and didn't feel "solid". I also wasn't crazy about having to use the adapter bushings to make them fit correctly. I ended up throwing the stock Gibson Deluxe tuners back on until I got the Sperzel's.

I still have 'em. I may throw them in something someday.

I put these on a Gibson LP worn brown Studio I had and they dropped right on in place of the Gibson/Kluson deluxe tuners. I got used to the knurled part on top real quick, especially when changing strings. Hope this helps. :]

Just FYI, I put a set of Schaller M6 tuners on an LP studio I got back in 1991 and the only thing I had to do was drill one small 9/32 hole in the back of the headstock for each tuner. Then just put some wood filler in the old Kluson holes and it worked out great.
