I like the Round Core/Nickel strings best; IME they have a better rolled off tone. For day to day stuff I like DRs or the Burnished Nickel Rockers. I prefer the DRs because they're round core (GHS stopped making the BNs with round core) and have a little more looseness. Either one works though; I've never thrown a gig and went: "Damn slight difference in string tension..."

For recording I'll splurge for something nice like Pyramids or Snake Oil. The main reason I do this is that these strings sound newer, longer. They also sound just a bit better.

On an unrelated note, I popped some DRs onto my Strat yesterday and it made far more difference there then on my Pauls. Perhaps this is due to the scale length?

Either way, the guitar used to sound very dull. None of the bounce and snap of a Fender. The DRs gave it the springy, bouncy sound. The notch positions sound proper now. The other bonus is the longer neck is easier to play with the looser strings. I did have to readjust the trem though.

DR Pure Blues, I usually use DM Blue Steels, but since trying these out they feel even better. I'm on the fence about the tone, they may be darker than I would like, but they are super easy to bend even on a bad arthritis day, even easier than steel 9's IMHO.

It may have a lot to do with playing style too. I do a lot of bends and vibrato. After a few years of moderate use with a mix of steel and SS strings on my Strat, I had frets with flat spots and scallops that could easily be seen at more than arms length.

I think playing style has a lot to do with fretwear. I'm also using a lot of bends and vibrato, and have a pretty light touch. Again, I haven't seen a lot of difference between standard and all-nickel strings. I understand that SS strings may be a whole 'nother topic, here, but I really haven't used them. Further, I rotate my guitars enough that any fretwear is likely to be distributed. And finally, I have a few guitars with stainless frets; these really seem to ignore fretwear in my stack.

Fender Pure Nickel for me.......10-46

I've tried them all and I feel they have the best vintage sound - which is my sound.

YMMV
