You guys that use pure nickel strings, what brand do you recommend and why? I generally use nickel wound D'adderio's but I'm thinking about going to pure nickel to save wear and tear on the frets plus, to capture a more vintage tone from my les Paul's.

Pyramid Guitar Strings

Dealing with Strings and Beyond is as nice as the Pyramid strings. (I'm just a customer, a happy one.)

Same experience here. Mike at strings and beyond is great and I love the Pyramid Nickel Classics (Round wound).
They cost more than other strings but I get a lot more life out of them so it evens out in the end

I've had dozens of D'Addario Pure Nickel sets on my guitars and they are consistently good.

I've on and off used pure nickel strings (and, okay, probably more often used cheap GHS Boomers interspersed with Markley Cold Steels when I'm thinking I need something fancy for a gig), but I'm not sure that I've seen either of the benefits you're looking for happen with pure nickel strings. I don't think they reduce wear and tear on the frets and you're not going to collect a more vintage tone from your Les Pauls unless you have a more vintage Les Paul.

Honestly, I think that changing strings more often does more for both of those ventures than anything else. Nothing like a corroded set of pure nickel strings to grind divots in your frets, and they sound and play like crap when they've gone off. And if you're working with a set of Burstbuckers or '57s in your LP, you're not going to get anything vintage out of them no matter how much you pay for strings.

That said, and that experience ignored, give the D'addarios a shot.

Pure nickel strings definitely don't wear down frets as fast as the much harder steel and SS strings.

I agree, science says so too.

Stay-In-Tune (SIT) Pure Nickel (silly name, IMO - whatever)

Based on my guitar tech's recommendation more than a couple of years back

I like the way they sound, feel, and play - rarely break

Can't prove they're markedly better than all the various brands/types I've played in the past

It's as simple as I like them best by far (long history of playing GHS Boomers)

Purely subjective...

Results may vary and frequently do

For the over 20 years playing guitar, I've NEVER been loyal or stuck to a brand of strings... TO me, if you kept them fresh it didn't matter what name was on the package. All that mattered was the guage.

Then I bought a pack of these (same guage as pic and everything):

And since then, I haven't purchased a single other brand. I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with the fact that they say GIBSON on them. Like I said, string-wise, I never gave a damn about brand - just guage.

These, to me sound more consistent, have a tighter feel, and they're about $7 a pack here in Canada. Not the cheapest, but definitely not the priciest. So maybe psychological, but for those reasons, they sound/feel better to me.

Anyone else use those? I've got D'Addarios on my Fenders and GHS Boomers on my 7-string... Might try the Gibby Nickels on the Tele soon...

D'Addario, I have em on different guitars from 9's to 11's. Why? cause they are cheaper than boutique strings
& sound just as good as anything else I've tried.
