Hello Everyone:

AZPaul: it's better than the other prophecy that's out, at least with this one if you don't like the electronics, you can do a traditional les paul setup.

my friend has one, and it is actually pretty decent, he got it from AMS, it needed a setup, but after that, it plays pretty well.

price wise, it's not bad either.

check around online, some places are offering discounts on new epiphone guitars, I think sam ash had a deal recently.

take care

I haven't been able to find a better price and non of the discounts that are at MF work on Epis. ZZounds has a nice 4 payment option though.

Have these been substantially upgrade in overall quailtiy from the earlier issues, both LP and SG?

My guitar store bud said of the first issue LP's "they're not a Les Paul" when asked how good they were.
Obviously people had been asking how they compare to a decent LP.

I'm still considering the later versions of the first issue SG's, they look great and sound/play good, and have ebony freatboards!

Hello Everyone:

AzPaul: there were sales in January, I haven't purchased a new guitar in a while, I don't really keep up with the prices, AMS has a payment plan also.

Rhust: I agree with you, but I wished this version had the dirty fingers, the one with the dirty fingers looks like a esp in my opinion due to the lack of controls, les pauls don't look right without two volumes, or two tones, unless it is a lp special.

5-0 Phonebooth: my friend Tom has both versions, quality wise, they are about the same, but here's the kicker, the earlier one with the single controls, my friend had issues from the start, frets were lifting up right around the 18th fret.

it's a decent guitar, but I don't purchase new ones unless it is MIK, MIJ, or USA, bad experiences with the MIC stuff.

take care

Hello Everyone:

not all of the prophecy models have 4 knobs, the ones from a few years ago had only two knobs

EpiphoneLP%20Prophecy.jpg

they just started making 4 knob versions in the last year

as for the dirty fingers, it's nice they put good pickups inside the guitar, but the bad part is the rest of the electronics suffer, Tom changed everything over to CTS , switchccraft and Orange drops, hell of an improvement.

Hello Everyone:

Paruwi: everyone has their own opinion, the chinese stuff might have gotten better, but I have had more that one chinese made guitar, and I refuse to buy anymore chinese made guitars, bad experiences leave a sour taste in your mouth especially when you don't have money to burn.

I have owned Japanese, Korean and USA made epiphone guitars, I have had good luck with them, same with other companies, but if someone offered me a chinese epiphone for free, I would unload it as fast as I can for a korean or japanese model.

I am not flaming someone for buying a chinese guitar, everyone wants an affordable guitar especially in todays economy.

mine was a brand new LP standard, the neck broke for no reason at all, when I took it to the dealer, the salesman told me it has been a common problem with epiphones made in china having issues as of late and didn't hesitate to give me an exchange or a refund.

as for the bad experience # 2, it was an Ibanez artist series lp style one, the fret board seperated after 1 month.

so for this reason I will only buy certain guitars made in certain countries anymore.

my esp grassroots LP MIK is still rocking with no issues ever since I purchased it new from Ibashi music back in 2005,

my orville MIJ from 2000 is still rocking with no issues, and my latest MIK epi black beauty from 2000 seems to be a-ok.

live and learn as they say.

take care

The new GX models no longer have "Dirty Fingers" pups in them but rather the Gibson 490R/498T humbucker combination. BTW, my experience with MIC Epiphones has been just the opposite of yours. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

The 498T is actually a high output P/U. Not as much so as a Dirty Fingers but maybe enough to fit your needs. Paired with the 490R in the neck it gives you more of a balance than two high output P/U's would. I'd love to sit down for an hour with the new GX to see how it performs. I kind of wish it came in Midnight Ebony and Sapphire. Here's a comparison chart of Gibson P/U's.

Thanks for that information SJM.
What is your opinion of the current Tribute with the 57 PU's verses the new GX?
I realize that you have not had the GX in your hands - don't know about the Tribute.
Just would like your thoughts.
Thanks, Richard

Hello Everyone:

Paruwi: I owned a coronet Re-issue, an original Coronet, and a Epiphone Spirit, the one that looks like a LP special with a single humbucker.

as for the stuff in China, I might give it a second chance now that the quality control is getting better, but I noticed for a long time epiphone was using a 2 piece neck and it was near the headstock, I think they call it a scarf joint, please forgive me if I am worng on what it's called, I have brain farts.

my bad experiences happened a few years ago, I think I paid $649 ??? for the LP and $599 for the ibanez.

at those prices they should have been decent.

my next purchase is going to be a gibson SG, a friend of mine is selling a platinum edition special, as for epiphones, I have seen the Bonamossa, I like it, but what I don't like is the finish on the back, epiphone should have made it transparent or natural.

I used to have a lot of cool toys, but when my father passed away in 2007, a lot of them had to be sold off to pay for funeral expenses and bail my mother out of debt, so I started over and I am still regretting some of the stuff I sold.

but my next LP if I can't afford a gibson, will probably be a edwards or a burny, if not I will give a newer epiphone a chance.

as for the prophecy, it's not a bad guitar, as I said my friend has both of them.

but I think the newer one is way better.

take care
George
