Well I hear conflicting ideas so i want to ask. Now when I turn on I always turn my fender on in standby and give it about a minute. I then flip the standby switch.

I heard somewhere not to do the reverse, but to just turn it off. something about double voltage bursts vs a single. So should I put it into standby before turning off or turn off first?

I turn it to standby first before I flip the power switch. If I turn the power switch first before putting it on standby, I hear some crackling in the amp.

In the Vox AC30 the standby switch isn't even necessary; I only used it if the amp was left on for longer periods without me playing.

On Marshall and Fender amps, I use the standby when turning on the amp, but not when shutting down.

Considering I don't have a standby switch on mine, I turn the volume to 0 then shut it off.

+1

All my amps save 1 do not have a standby. And on that one I don't use it.

I've been told to turn the power off first by my tech. The same principle as your PA equipment. Power amps off first, then the mixing console. Reverse on start up.

That's correct, but that doesn't apply to a guitar amp without a standby. That's why I roll off the volume before shutting it down.

But WITH a standby, I'd follow jason's 1st post. :thumb:

Turning off the amp WITHOUT using the standby switch will drain down your filter caps. Arguable as to whether or not this matters (although it certainly would to someone working inside of it). If you put it on standby first, your main filter caps will still usually have full signal charge and when you turn off the amp there is nowhere for that charge to go (although most newer amps use bleeder resistors in parallel now). It really shouldn't matter either way unless you are working inside the chassis, in which case you should be making sure all the caps are discharged anyway...

On shut down, I always hit the standby switch before the power switch. I don't think it matters much, so long as you remember to hit the standby - so that next time you power up the standby isn't on.

Turning the amp off at the end of the night with the "power" switch will not hurt it.

Yes, of course. That would be your only option. Well, I guess the other option is to unplug it?:hmm:

Here's how I do it in steps:

To turn on the power to the amp:
Step 1: Turn amp 'on'.

then, when I am finished playing, to turn off the power to the amp:
Step 1: Turn amp 'off'.

I hope this wasn't too complicated.

Same here. I go straight to OFF though, when I'm pulling out the chassis. But I still drain the caps just to be sure.
