I have an old pot I can't make sense of. Clearly CTS and 500K but there is probably too much solder to sort out the date. But I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. Anyone?

Ya, the last 4 digits are the date code YY/WW, buried under the solder.
Maybe go after it with some desoldering braid.

It also looks like it's either been opened up previously or someone pushed a knob on from the front WAY too hard and damaged it, by the bent tabs that hold the back case on and the guts together. Just throw it out.

The "EP" designation means it was made for AllParts, which alone dates it to recent time. The wafer used also dates it to recent time. The shape, style, and size of the lugs are also different from vintage CTS pots, as are the way the outer two are mounted to the wafer.

I can usually tell how old pot is by lighting it on fire...

Does that explain why the ohm reading is 714?

It was made in Orange County?

Then again... depending on the tolerance, a 500k 20% pot would be "in spec" at 600k.
