Could be just a good counterfeit of Marc's guitar that was made by a fan at some point utilizing real and non Gibson parts n pieces...could be (or not) a counterfiet made to cash in on Bolin's Les Paul , who knows.....I have seen several "bursts" over the years that were NOT Gibson bursts that would fool most people, not stating this is a "fake" but without hands on apples to apples definite documents and such it is hard to state what it (the guitar) is and what it would not be....

Honestly don't think the 'replica' counterfeit game was afoot back in those days. For sure there were knock off bursts and 50's gold top and '68 gold top conversation but to do an exact replica of Bolans guitar...i doubt it.

The pics don't lie. There are way too many constancies to even remotely think that it's a replica.

looks to me this is a line in the finish due to touching up after a neck change.

how many times has this guitar been refinished. My guess is lots. That finish line is long gone.

The comparison in post 190 clearly shows the wood grain to be an exact match. the nicks and scars can all easily be duplicated. The wood grain is impossible to duplicate. Clearly the same guitar

With respect, I think there's some slight confusion here. I agree that the sunburst guitar in post 190 is definitely the same guitar the OP has now but the question is whether it's the same guitar (body at least) as Marc's famous orange stained Les Paul as seen in various pics throughout his career?

Having looked at a lot of pics of Marc with his guitar and looking closely at the pics the OP has posted, in my opinion there are more differences in the instruments than similarities.

Regarding the 'block' being a difference in the finish, whilst it's plausible, it wouldn't really make sense to do that unless the guitar body was damaged. Re-necking a Les Paul doesn't leave any scarring on the body so why refinish a small portion of the back of the guitar and then not do the same when the neck gets changed to a black one? And if the body WAS damaged, then the OPs guitar would show this.

A number of folks requested pictures from the OP of the inside of the cutaway earlier in the thread but none were forthcoming. Of the pictures we have so far of the OP's guitar none actually clearly show this area so no conclusions can be made. If it is indeed a structural repair and not a finish repair and this is on the OP's guitar then that would nail it as being Bolan's guitar beyond any doubt. As it stands there are enough matches in top figure to identify it as Marc's guitar IMHO.

I have been in France the last two months because i deal in guitars, a client mentioned it to me when i got back that i maybe interested in this thread, while reading through what people were saying i came across the jogonmateyboy post which sounded like information was needed about the guitar.I contacted famousfrets.com and to my surprise it turned out to be the guy i put in touch with the les paul that Keith Richards owned, and the 59 junior that Mick Ralphs used. I lost contact with steve shortly after i helped him out.The guitars were reviewed in G&B magazine he told me. Steve said he has had no response from the owner of the Bolan guitar, and from the pictures he can see he thinks it may be the guitar he looked at in the late 70s after it went missing. He would not tell me much about what he knows about it except that there is a particular mark inside the guitar that he wanted to get a close look at to verify it. I also was told that he has some 8mm film from the gig when Bolan broke the neck on the guitar, he was then given his flying v to start the next song with. This was in 1972 and he took the gear out for T. REX that night.Bolan new he was filming the show for the fan club and had clearance. Later he remembers seeing the guitar neck broke in the case. The next time he saw it was in the late 70s.The reason i was contacted is because the client i was dealing with knew i would not believe this thread. I have looked carefully at the pictures shown and what we have here is a guitar that is now on its 5th neck, its had three different colors,it has lost the bridge pickup, the electrics are dubious and the hardware and controls dont look the part. What exactly is going for this guitar i just dont know, except to say if i had a lock of Mick Jagger's hair it wont sing Jumpin Jack Flash anytime soon. I am not convinced of the overlay of pictures either,Photoshop or picasa are great tools for putting in detail that you want, but the fact he wont let steve look at it says it all really. I know he has had many Bolan fans asking him to do a timeline and review on the guitar, but i think Paul likes the attention he is getting from this,as for me ,well two years ago while in France i sold a guitar to a well known collector who was showing me his guitars, an old case was brought out and when the lid was opened, i recognised the guitar immediately as the Marc Bolan les paul. This guitar had the custom neck still fitted and had no serial number on the back which is how Gibson sent them out in those days,Also in the case was the original machine heads from 72 which were bevelled japanese copy Grovers, you can see the on the guitar in 72. It now has tulip Gibson fitted, and the only other thing that was done is that when he bought it, the color was faded and the top edge was worn through to the wood,it was then stained exactly like it was from71-72 period from the color underneath the pickup covers as a match. Its amazing and i have contacted him in the hope he will send me a couple of pictures to show these points. So Paul what is your reason for silence, or are you going to let this guitar be scrutinized by someone who knows more about it than anyone i know, which is steve,i dont think so,but a shame none the less for the fans and collectors alike!

damn Brother....that is interesting information but hard as hell to read.

how about some breaks, paragraphs, commas....something to help us little people out, please?

also a little confusing...your guy Steve thinks it may be the guitaar, but then you actually saw the guitar somewhere else (France 2 years ago) and you recognised it immediatly???

the story is a little confusing.

PS when you get those pics, post them, until then, well........break it down for us.

Paul has already stated he does not own the guitar....it is his Dad's.

He owes none of us an explanation. :thumb:

Thanks for your post on this thread. Can you tell me the colour of the guitars body when you saw it two years ago?

First, having been away from the thread for awhile, it is good to see that it's still live and developing.

Second, the Barrie Wentzell photos referred to as the 'garden' photos in a recent post were taken on Hampstead Heath in London. I think this session was toward the end of June and possibly a few days before Marc wrote 'Ride A White Swan' ... which gives them an extra magic, attractive as they are anyway. They're not to be confused with the later brown album session, taken by Peter Sanders, which really was in a garden.

Third, referring to the quote above, the account doesn't quite hang together with what we know. The original neck-break was in the US at the end of April 1971, not 1972, and there is nothing about that gig - a support slot - being filmed for the fan club. Marc first used the Flying V live on the autumn Electric Warrior tour of 1971. There is a photo session at his home in Clarendon Gardens where he is posing with it - that's in the summer of 1971.

This reference to a filmed gig might be to a later gig where the guitar neck repair might have failed in concert (depends what 'break' means in this context) - the Boston UK January gig was filmed by ATV - and then there are the June 1972 gigs - in one interview during the brief UK tour Bolan says that the guitar kept going out of tune - this incident might have led to the replacement Custom neck.

It goes without saying any film (!) of a Bolan guitar neck break would be a sensational find. :wow: I'm not holding my breath.

Let's hope there are more details to come.

One more thing ... and I guess many of the readers of this thread may know this but just in case ... regardless of the Les Paul you play to get close to the sound of that original Les Paul as it sounded in 1970 on the brown album get your hands on a Shatterbox and / or Rangemaster Treble Booster (or affordable clone thereof). That dirty, wirey tone Bolan captured on that album owed much to those effects. Not a standard rock Les Paul sound at all. And use very light strings. And experiment playing with the flat of your fingernail, not a pick. (I will summarize some of this stuff in the book I've been working on).

Looking forward to reading more.

so - Keith Levene posted a clip of Telegram Sam that popped up on my facebook page - which got me thinking - I wonder when Marc Bolan replaced the neck on his Les Paul - so I googled it - found this thread and THREE HOURS LATER ive reached the end . I'd heard mutterings about this , but so great to see the whole subject unfold.
I was a big T Rex fan when I was young - still have all my 45s and my juke box always has Ride a a White Swan or Hot Love in there somewhere .
Im lucky enough to have a couple of letters from Marc in the archives requesting pedals or amps from the shop - there is even a story that he named the Colorsound Overdriver when my Dad and Uncle wanted to change it from the Power Boost pedal !! Don't know if anyone knows can shed any light on that ? Rikky R ?
So the guitar was stolen in Denmark St ? There were two Macaris shops there I think in '70 - and quite a few studios - not sure if Regents Sounds were still going - but there we're studios at 20 ? behind Rhodes music and Im pretty sure there were some in Denmark place - sorry I was only 7 years old - I just missed all this stuff .
I did sell the custom shop Bolans - and of course they were plain tops with LP custom necks - but there was something pretty cool about them.
Anyway - just wanted to say thank you MY LES PAUL FORUM for the last three hours - bloody great !

Anthony, I worked in the lower shop (Charing X Road) with your dad from 1969 to 1976. Started as a Saturday boy and school holidays then went full time. Great days! In the early 70's everyone wanted the Sola Sound gear and then went nuts over the Coloursound range, so much so that I was tasked with clearing out the loft of all the old redundant Sola Sound pedals and chucking them in a skip! And there were boxes and boxes of them!! Why oh why didn't I keep a box??!! But that is how things moved back then, fashion followed fashion. And then one day a rep came in from a company called Roland, demo'd some pedals and we were like "F***!!"

I can vaguely remember Marc's connection to the pedals, anyone who was anyone was coming into the shop or ringing up and ordering gear back then. He may well have come in when I was over at the little Italian restaurant just over in Old Compton street picking up your dad's daily plate of spaghetti bolognese!!:thumb:

It seems no-one has been able to take the story of Marc's Les Paul forward from gitfreak's post since the end of last year (?). I'm just checking in to see if anyone else is keeping an eye on the thread.

I've subscribed from the initial post, only to follow what's happening. Other than that, I have nothing.
