I understand hat you were trying to do but anything related to this topic allways ends in the same arguement and we've heard it all before.

Did you vote or are you just lurking.

In other words, you can't tell the fvckin' difference, can you?

Not if done well. The problem is that a relic no longer looks like an old guitar so much as an old guitar now looks like a relic. I see a real 50s Les Paul and I think "Oh, another relic." Relicing has devalued the whole look by taking that which was formerly unique and making it commonplace.

Generally speaking I like my guitars new and shiney initially.
Nothing more rewarding than seeing them age on you over the years and being able to say:" She walked a long way with me.".
I do dig the work some of the masters around here do to their guitars though.
For me personally there is not a lot though that justifies the extra price one has to pay.
Who knows, now that I'm getting older myself I might bite the bullet and get a repro worn axe as my next purchase, granted the chance that I will fade before "she" does. :laugh2:

I just don't like fake things, even if they look real.

They still turn your head though, right!? :laugh2::laugh2:

Relic feels real even if fake doesn't.

I voted 'No real preference'.

However, I have just finished a butterscotch Tele as close to a '52 as possible but for modern electrics to my liking. I've aged all the chrome parts as I don't like shiny metal hardware on guitars, that said I do like shiny chrome on cars...:hmm:

I've purposely not over shined the body finish and let the nitro finish do its own thing. Already it has started to lightly check as I guess a '52 did back in its day. It looks the part already to me; a well kept '52. :)

I have bought new, used and new VOS (I know, excluded..). I have reliced new guitar parts (chrome hardware only).

I would've liked my '58 VOS I bought to be period correct. I would pay a luthier or HM to correct those incorrect features; I wanted a '58 guitar not a 2008 Standard. I'd like it to check and fade naturally.

I do like new, I do like relic but I have issues man...:thumb:

It goes like this:

The myth:
dude pulls out his guitar. It's severely checked and worn. The hardware is tarnished from playing in thousands of smokey bars from coast to coast. He's a true rock and roller, and everyone knows by looking at his axe.

The truth:
It's his first gig. His guitar is a month old. He lives in his mom's basement, and he paid a king's ransom to have it scratched and beat up:laugh2::cool:

Try to keep it civil! This statement alludes negativity towards one point view and is bound to draw people in an argument, something I expressly said \i was trying to avoid.
IF you voted, great, thanks but keep the inflammatory comments to yourself please.

I prefer them aged, but that is because I am old now and don't have time to age them naturally, and can afford to get someone to make my guitar exactly what I want - it is a luxury and an art form to someone who appreciates vintage but can not afford the original.

Aesthetics is all in the eye of the beholder. I don't give a crap if you like what I like.

And for those that say they don't want a "fake" - then what are you that just bought a reissue then? It is not a real 59 58 60 etc. is it???

I most definitely prefer mine looking new. If it is a new guitar I like it to stay
looking new as long as possible. Beat up,worn guitars have "mojo"? Well, for
my part I'm just totally unconvinced of that. A great player is what delivers
the "mojo", magic or whatever you like to call it. I've seen some aged guitars
that look so dirty I would not want to touch them. But I do respect anyone's
preference. Everyone should play what they want!

Could care less...we are talking REPRODUCTIONS either way, new and shiny or beat to hell, They are not classic antiques (yet).

There are some relic feel guitars I like. Nash comes to mind. Reasonable priced vintage is what he does.I've seen some Makeovers, and like them but spending 2k on a as new guitar isn't me. Now if we were talking a salvage project-or non historic, possibly, just not up for sinking a few grand into my R9 (yet).

I think its really cool. however I relic my guitars one day at a time. I took a nice big chunk out of my Pink paisley Tele when it was almost new. I remember being so mad about it. It was on the upper corner and went right down to bare wood. My girlfriend took her pink nail polish and painted over the spot one night while I was sleeping. It actually didn't look that bad. That was almost thirty years ago. She went off to collage the next fall and died in a car accident while driving home for the winter break during a snowstorm. The nail polish is still on that guitar.

That's like asking if I like souped up cars. It depends on how and how well it's done.

Nope. I'd rather take the time to wear my new baby in. I appreciate some people might like it pre-done, but it just isn't my thing. I love the feel of a new Guitar with no scratches or dings, with the paint still on. And then using it and creating those things through years of playing to give it character. It's a personal thing. =)

Edit~ Admittedly though, there have been artificially aged Guitars I've seen that have looked cool to me. I'd just prefer to do it myself is all. =)

I don't like aged either way. I prefer a guitar that has been taken care of. Refin if not.
