What is a good polish to use on a '74 Les Paul? Assume they had nitrocellulose finish back then, but not sure.

I like Gibson polish.
It's definitely a nitro-finished guitar. There was a '98 to '06 LP Special SL (Sans Lacquer) model., but all the rest are nitro.

Always hear great things about them. Pricey but results justify the cost.

Agreed. I use it on my '79 - it just somehow enhances the sheen of the old finish, which is why I recommended for Ops '74.

By and large though I use the Gibson pump polish on my "modern" Gibsons.

The big key with polishes and nitro is to avoid silicone products. The silicone can bleed through the nitro and contaminate the wood which makes finish repairs a huge pita and I believe even cause discoloration.

Virtuoso is a good brand, they make a good cleaner and polish set. Music nomad makes good stuff, the Gibson pump spray seems popular.

If you do a decent amount of guitar work for friends or have a lot of guitars it pays to look at car care products. They’re usually a lot cheaper and the same or better than the music industry puts out.

If you’re just up keeping a few guitars of your own and don’t want to bother buying bigger sizes than you need than the guitar branded stuff is fine too.
