i just bought a 2017 les paul traditional with the intention of putting a poker chip on (I can't stand how the look without it), but am having trouble. It seems like the switch is too short so it doesn't have enough clearance once the chip is on. Has anyone else had this problem?

Which switch nut came on your guitar?

Flat.

Or deep?

Not sure what the problem is then, but it definitely doesn't fit right. The switch doesn't move all the way to either position.

Are you sure you have the nut all the way on? Sometimes when putting it on it can go on a touch cross-threaded (for lack of a better term) and will seem very tight, but in fact isn't all way on... making the switch seem short. Take your switch backplate off, and hold the switch so you know you have a good angle for the nut, then try again.

I tried a couple times and from the back (with the switch plate off) that it's all the way in.

I just put a poker chip on a '17 Tribute - I was able to get it on with the stock flat washer, but it was barely biting the threads, so I bought a deep nut from Stew-Mac and it worked fine. Although, the Tributes may have a thinner maple cap than the Trads.

Have you checked if there is a nut or washer(s) on your switch ? Inside the cavity that is (so, the underside of your maple cap).

Is your deep nut TOO deep for the switch? They are really soft. You can sand/file a little off the bottom of the nut if you need to.

I've put a poker chip on my Les Paul Faded 2017 T at first I was struggling trying to screw it all back together, I was about to do something stupid (had a knife in hand ready to cut through the poker chip to make the hole bigger) then I've decided to open the switch cavity. There were 3 washers stopping the switch from going further out. I just took out 2 washers and I could finally screw it all back together easily!

Yes, it makes sense that they would compensate for the depth lost from not having a poker chip by just adding washers on the other side of the switch.

On a side note, I'm planning on adding a poker chip on my '17 Tribute. Can anyone recommend a company or brand that makes a color close to the cream pick guard / rings? I'm trying to avoid ending up with a Barbie pink chip or a green/yellow one.

I bought a Gibson-branded one, and it was way too orangey-pink. Grabbed one from Stew-Mac, and it was much better.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of those who detest those who resurrect zombie-ish threads, I just wanted to thank @Kitsune for his knowledge and assistance shared above....I recently got a 2018 Tribute Goldtop and wanted to put the chip on. For me, it's just part of a Les Paul even though I know it's completely for show only. Kinda hard to believe they ever started putting them on like that but, I digress.

Without that advice, I'd have probably given up once I couldn't get enough threads to use.

With that advice, success!

Figured this may possibly help someone else, too.

Hey there, I think it's cool to do a little necro on this thread if it can help others too! I am glad I could help you with that situation! I remember I was really going crazy when I tried to put that poker chip on and was about to do some damages to the chip or worse; to the guitar. I think there was also another thread where another user had the same problem and the guy was also going nuts! Luckily the solution was super simple!

Just take off the two additional washers!

Change your switch tip. I had that issue with a 18 SG and got an unnoticably more narrow based tip, everything was fine
