Hi Im nick and Im new to the site, would love your help and knowledge if you have the time I’m trying to age my Recently inherited les Paul custom
I haven’t taken it to bits to date the pots as I’m terrified I’ll break it I think it’s 1969as it has the made in USA printed under the serial number 963***
But it also has the dot above the i and open b and o.
If you could help I’d be very grateful
Regards nick willmer

Easiest way to tell would be the pot codes. I can't see much on your tiny pics, but it's the 2 digits after 137. Looks like a 7. So my guess would be 1970-72.

One of the pots seems to be from 1971.
137 71??
Made in USA and a volute indicates 1970s as well, I believe.

Hi yes it’s definitely a pancake body, what’s throwing me out is the dot on the i, thought they’d stopped in 69

Yeah, a friend of mine has a 1970 gold top Deluxe with the dot, but with a closed b and o, I think.

His has a transitional (baby) volute, pancake body, 3 piece neck, and no "Made in USA" stamp. His serial number is 9173xx.

One or two of his original pots are dated to early 1970. (the other two are 1969, I think) Same "black Beauty" Sprague caps as yours.

That volute and the pancake body would make it '70 or later and the Sprague black beauties were used ( in my experience) up until '73. If it were a late '71 through '72 it would have the "Gibson" imprinted pickup covers. That leaves the most likely years '70 through most of '71 or '73. The pot dates should nail it down a little further.

That logo looks like someone has tried to create the open b and o later on.
The 'G' is very angular and thin, not at all the curved thicker pearl from the vintage 50's and late 60's. There are also several corners of other letters (like the top left of the b and o) that are sharp where they should be curved.
