pickup replacements for 77' strat with maple neck alder body ( routed for single coils/no swimming pool routing). Any single coils compete with humbuckers ? Hate the single coils in this strat. Willing to try another set of pups, am very close to selling this strat. Looking to complement high gain amp (hagen). Any suggestions are appreciated.

Two of my favorite from Fender are the 57/62 and Custom Shop 69s

+100 on the 57/62's. If you're on a budget, you can try the GFS Premium Alnico II's. They sound very close to the 57/62's.

OASN, if you don't like single coils, why don't you sell the Strat and get an SG. Otherwise, you'd have to shop a body with HSH or a swinming pool.

Don't be scared of risking a cheap Dual coil single Strat size humbucker off Ebay.

BLACK -PAF SPEC'D-DUAL RAIL HUMBUCKER-FIT STRAT,TELE,CUSTOM S-COIL POCKET-NEW | eBay

I got one off Dangleberry's in the UK,

Strat Humbucker Pickup: Single Coil sized Twin Blade Humbucker to suit Strat etc

This video was done with it,

and this track was Bridge Humbucker/Middle with tone all off,

Azeus.mp3 - File Shared from Box - Free Online File Storage

the Rhythm sound was same position, different sound/Podfarm patch.

I was going to say the same exact thing! Normally I'm not a fan of EMG's, but the DG-20's sounded better than any Strat I ever had. They do a very nice S-S-S, and a very convincing humbucker sound.

I put some Dimarzio Injectors in my Melancon (custom Strat) and they sound amazing, though they don't sound like humbuckers - they don't sound like single coils either. They're somewhere in between - and noiseless.

Phildog, I agree not making swimming pool to fit humbuckers , maybe it's just me am not a single coil fan. I do have a lovely Anderson that has hss, it's in a whole other league. The is a second attempt to like this guitar's sound. the tech installed these pups from all parts offerings, his recommendation. Perhaps they just suck also. The neck is amazing On this guitar that's the only thing I like about it. Have 3 L.P, also considering pup replacement on the 83 pearl cream custom. The pickup rings say pat. Applied on them I have never seen that an a custom before ?

Hey, there's always Mighty Mite. They have HSH bodies too. It'd be worth since you have a neck that's got the mojo. Then, you can try some GFS hummers and see how she responds. I don't know if you want a vintage sound, or something a little hotter, but I have GFS Vintage 59's in my LP. I love them. I think they can do everything that I need them to do. In fact, they have a nice working relationship with Ash bodies. That much kind of surprised me. It wasn't too bright at all. Actually sounded bitchin!

Looking for modern tones-hard rock area. I 'll have to check out mighty mite bodies. Have to keep cost to benefit factor in check. If its better to sell strat and get something that will satisfy me or monkey around with piecing parts strat feankenstein creation, well
most of thus super strats are exactly that. Hhhm have a l.p. custom that could use some new pups, considering j s Moore or bk's.

Not really. My Melancon came stock with a "blues wind" pickup made by Dimarzio. They basically sounded vintage single coil - tons of bite and jangle - nice, not necessarily my thing.

Not wanting to change the aesthetic I wound up with the Injectors. My guitar looks the same as it did before the swap (which was important to me). These pups have the best of both worlds for me. Paul pretty much nails the description in that vid above. I'm happy with them.

I have a set of these sitting in a drawer that you could try cheap!

GFS Grey Bottom Pickups

They are hot as hell! Much too hot for my use. I bought them thinking they would be more like P90's but they just sound like a really really hot strat pickup. PM if you're interested.

After a long search, I dropped Lace Sensor Hot Golds in my strat. Great tone and no hum. They are keepers.

If you want more of a humbucker sound, Seymour Duncan Hot Rails would be a great choice. Dave Murray of Iron Maiden has had them in his strat for a while, and I think he sounds great.

did it still retain most of that signature strat sound?

To start with, when I bought my first Strat, I freaking HATED the bridge pup; I'd been playing a Les Paul for over a decade and always humbuckers before that. It took a while to accept the Strat for what it is and not try to compare it to a guitar with humbuckers. If I want a humbucker sound, I play a guitar with humbuckers, if I want a Strat sound, I play a Strat.

If you're looking for a hard rock sound and want a super Strat setup without routing, I'd go with a Duncan Lil' Screamin' Demon or Little '59 (depending on how bright you want it) in the bridge and Duckbuckers (noiseless) in the middle and neck. Check out some sound clips.
