I've tried a bunch of pickup's. Lately (while still searching for the "ultimate" neck pickup replacement) I stumbled over a 7K std 1990 Les Paul pickup (thrown in the bin). Well, that's quite far from a boutique pickup. Though it would be to much to say it's ultimate, it sunds surprisingly good. Any thoughts on that?

Yes, they are great. A bit prone to being microphonic with the covers still on, but great. What's the resistance measurement on it? I've still got my 1990 Standard, and have always believed the original pickups (long gone) were 490s, but they might have been 496/498. I'd love to know what they (probably) were.

There are a lot of non-boutique pickups that do a surprisingly good job!

[Just saw you said 7K - a 490... such an under-rated pickup.]

I'm curious about this too, having just replaced the pickups in my '92 Standard. The originals read 8.0 and 8.25 on the ohmmeter, and that flies in the face of what I've read about what model pickups were used on Standards in that time frame. They have no markings on them whatsoever. Any ideas, Liam or anyone else?

Thanks for replying. Yes, it was prone to being microphonic with cover on. Factory winding was really sloppy done on this one (resulting in slack wire, etc. and possibly the low/7K reading).

My unreliable memory always has the early to mid 90s Standards with 490R/490T, so about 8 k for the neck and just over for the bridge. But like you say, they weren't marked. I always liked them...

The originals from mine went in other guitars when I got into pickup swapping, and then the guitars got sold. The bridge pickup ended up in the bridge of a Jap Squier Tele that I never should have sold. It was a little monster with the Gibson pickup in it.

I thought I had. Must be my memory playing tricks on me again.

Or were you trying to make some other point?

Hell yes some of the o0ld gibbie34s had great sounding pups in them. The necks were very sweet.

I think the 490R vs. 490T are supposed to be nominally the same (naturally individual pu's do vary) but the primary difference is just the spacing.

I've decided to replace/test this std pickup with/against an incoming 7 K "boutique" PU. Hopefully I'll get time to record some before VS after samples.

The guitar, at that time eq w a BurstBucker 1 in neck position, can be heard here... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apH_K6VWCPg]YouTube - Peter Green Pickup modification.wmv[/ame]

Is that out of phase from wiring of magnet flipping?

I expect (hope) the "boutique" pu will arrive next week. I've also decided to include another non std pu in the before/after comparison. Guess that will slow down the process, but I'll come back.....

Boutique pickups can be a little bit slow arriving at times, so best to be a bit Zen and not build yourself up to a precise day. And that's not aimed at anyone in particular, it's just the nature of buying them sometimes.

my 1991 std had a very sweet sounding stock pickup in the neck position. The bridge was rubbish though and both became awfully microphonic.

I have an 89 custom that had the bill lawrence designed "circuitboard" pickups in them. i think these also overlapped into 1990 as well. i found them a little week and not too great, but a lot of people liked them.

A while ago ... [...]...[...] ... When I finally got the new pickup I found that no magnet swap was done... So, I placed a Burstbucker 1 (w magnet swapped) in bridge position to get the out of phase sound.

Gear:
Gibson Les Paul Std 2000
neck: custom wound PU (6.98)
bridge: BB 1 (7.4)

Fender Bandmaster 1967 (normal ch - vol 9, treble 9 and bass 2, Bright: off)
Marshall 4x10 Celestion

Sound sample: neck - neck & bridge - bridge --> [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6tt8HEw4Uk]YouTube - Pelikanmos II (only sound)[/ame]

Thanks, Burstbuckers works fine, and so did the 7K std 1990 pickup. I'm about to order a new bridge pick (think I'll have it 7.6). When installed I'll provide some samples for comparison + a sample of my LP's acoustic sound...

I came across a pair of Faber bridge studs, that's the reason I abandoned my original "comparison" plan....
