For 99% of the things that I play, I use a pick. There are a few songs, however, where I will use a pick and either/both my middle & ring fingers. They are few and far between, though. It's even more rare (almost never), where I use only my fingers. Especially, since I swore off playing Stairway :)

advantage to not using a pick - you get better with your fingers
disadvantage to not using a pick - you don't get good with a pick

there's things you can't do with a pick and there's things you can't do with your fingers

Reasons, I've grown used to not using a plectrum:

1. I don't have to constantly worry about whether or not you're muting strings correctly.

2. If a chord movement is big, you can move to it in steps, for example, you could just hit the root note on the 1
beat, and then hit another note on the 'and' of 1.

3. It's often a big jump, if you're moving to a string that's 2 or 3 strings away. With finger picking, there is always a
finger near each string

4. Too lazy to reach for my pick. And I've gradually realised how nearly everyone else depends on one.

It's funny, how usually when I go to pick up a guitar, someone will often say "oh hang on, I'll get you a pick"
