They're all over the web but you might as well start with Adobe:

Adobe Design Center - CS4 video tutorials on the How To Channel

The software is huge so don't expect to learn it all through tutorials though. You can also just dive right in by opening some photo you already have and just start messing around. The trick to the whole shebang is to learn how layers work; once you have that down, you're halfway there.

I'm completely self-taught, man. If I can do it, you can. Just decide what you want to do, look up a tutorial or two online, then, once you find that insanely boring, open up some pics and start screwing with stuff.

I use those A LOT.

And +1 to being self-taught. The version of CS3 (Lite) that I have didn't come with a tutorial...or ANY instruction for that matter. But I kept noddleing around with it for about 6 months, and now I can use it with my eyes closed.

not a video but i highly recommend this book...

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Photoshop-CS-Classroom-Book/dp/032119375X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1265290835&sr=8-1]Amazon.com: Adobe Photoshop CS Classroom in a Book (0785342193756): Adobe Creative Team: Books[/ame]

it comes with a cd with images to complete the lessons in the book. each lesson takes approx. 1 hour. you do not have to go in order. just figure out what you want to do and go straight to that lesson. i haven't completed mine. i use it as a reference when i have something specific in mind. it's great to have on hand.

also you can save a few bucks by getting an older version of the book. the difference between each version is usually only a lesson or 2. these "new" lessons usually have nothing to do with the nuts and bolts of photoshop.

good luck.

Thanks all. I found one or two things that helped a bit. This is my first attempt:

It'll do for what it is, but I think I need illustrator or something similar to play with vector graphics. This was a pain, but it'll do when printed.

Thanks again.

You can do some limited vector work in PhotoShop but, yeah, Illustrator is much better suited for it. This week, I seem to be living in Illustrator as well InDesign and Acrobat. All this just to edit existing InDesign files for schizophrenic salespeople - go figure!

Vector work is a pain in Photoshop, I never bothered to use Illustrator, but I do know it takes some doing to do vector work in PS... and it's extremely limited. I use PS for my graphic designs and that's pretty much it. I still need to get a tablet so that I can draw by hand rather than by mouse.
