The south China Sea..

Right on, Froggy. My wife and I have property next to China Beach in Hoi An (outside Danang). It's beautiful, and not like you remember it.

We have a saying down here: It really sucks. I wouldn't come if I were you. Stay where you are.

That said, we used to gig down in P'cola a lot in the 80s and I went there on my honeymoon. Pretty nice place although, personally, living on the beach or at the beach has never held appeal to me. People seem to like living in places like Fairhope, AL and Destin.

As to the idea of AL taking coastline from FL. Uh, how does this work? Our state militia vs their's? Our football teams in a winner take all?:laugh2:

All well and good until the next vast hurricane comes along and flattens your house...

It'd take me a lot to want to move to Florida.

It would take me a lot to move away :)

I grew up in NH and had enough of that cold white crap. No more engine block heaters, no more digging out the car, no more people parking in my dug out spot, no more feeling like a frozen herring. Nope, done.

The only things I miss are real Christmas trees and real lobstah.

Gulf Breeze/Orange Beach area while enjoying lovely weather is really a cultural waste land. If you're not into deep sea fishing, you'll have nothing to do and no one to do it with. The lack of even decent restaurants for an area filled with vacationers is puzzling and don't forget the constant stream of vacationers and spring break drunks. I mean no offense to any residents but it really is just too isolated. There are plenty of places in Florida with a lot more going on.

The Panhandle is affectionately called the redneck Riviera by Southerners. It is a big vaca land for Southerners. I like it but then I grew up down here. Best beaches in Fla are in Panhandle. Come down and spend some time in the different regions...then make up your mind

There's no place like home, Who, but traveling to dif places and seeing dif things and people kind of helps us evolve personally, I think. Trad vacation spots are a little bit canned and appeal to herd mentality. Going to a crowded beach and lying in the sand like a big frying pan full of pork chops never seemed like fun but then I work outside in the heat all the time. My wife adores it. People are pretty much the same wherever you go...mixed bag. We've all become a bit more homogenized to the delight of some and chagrin of others.

I lived in Alaska most my adult life so I feel your pain. Moved to Oregon in 2014 so I traded long dark cold snowy winters for shorter rainy ones. I can handle the rain because I don't have to shovel it.

I grew up down the road in Rochester, and being in the military have lived all over the states and world. I’ll take cold weather over the 100 deg with 90% humidity any day. The snow also cuts down on the bugs and water moccasins. That being said if I didn’t have to deal with any people,San Diego has the best weather, if you can afford to live by the ocean. 75 degrees year round with sun and a breeze.

My wife & I have been talking about this a lot recently. We're both tired of the cold & cost of living in NY and never want to see snow again.

Based on the traveling we've done for work and for fun, I like the desert and she likes being near a big body of water (but also hates the high heat & humidity!). And no, California is out for way too many reasons.

You're right, the most populated areas in Alaska can be less mild and get less snow than many locations in the lower 48. (I'm thinking more of Anchorage and the Matsu-Valley.) I worked in Valdez for about 4 years and man....never seen so much snow dump in one night as that place. I started a 12 hour shift one night at 1830 with bare ground, no snow. After 12 hours we couldn't see anything but lumps where our cars where parked. I drove an AWD Honda Element at the time, had to back up a couple feet and get a running start to climb out of the hole.

My wife and I want to stay in the PNW when we retire. Been looking at Sequim WA as a possibility. That area is in a rain shadow and gorgeous.

Yea I lived in that area for 11 years, grew up along the Miss Gulf Coast.

It's not a very happening area, especially for music.

I left the area, TOO HOT!!, and TOO MANY BUGS!!!

I now live in the southern tennessee valley, love it! Rarely snows, moderate temps, and not much humidity or bugs!

The three days I spent around Tampa/StPete were the longest two years of my life.

I hear you about that cold horseshit. I don't mind the occasional hard freeze we get here in Hill Country, but I don't do a foot of snow and I don't do a month of sub-freezing temps.

I've lived in quite a few states. NH, IN, PA, NY, FL, NC, TN, GA, TX and a few others. All in all, I like it better down here. I do miss things like a White xmas, real Maple syrup, etc but I don't miss that 7 month winter junk.
