My nephew was given a LP PeeWee to learn on.... the problem is the damn thing won't stay in tune. The tuners are coming apart, and I don't trust the cheapo bar tailpiece. I've ordered a set of Schallers, and a metric Badass-style bridge for it. It also needs a new nut, which I will replace.

I don't think the gauge of strings on it is correct. Does anyone know what strings Gibson/Epiphone recommends for this instrument?

Thanks!

You should be fine with 9's or 10's and remember that being a short scale it needs to tuned up a step and a half (a minor 3rd) above normal pitch.

And yes I stole that from a website....so there.

Well, the kid is just learning. Might be wiser to go with 11's or 12's and keep it tuned to concert pitch to train his ear.

He can learn to play lead on his next guitar.

IF.....and that's a big if....if the nut is cut for 9's or 10's you will have issues all day with 11's and 12's.

How old/what size is the little chap? Depending on your answer to those questions, I'd advise you'd be better off buying him a full-size rather than upgrading the PeeWee.

Edit: I forgot to say my daughter, who isn't the tallest, started learning on a full-size from the age of 8.

What issues would those be?

I am fabricating a new nut, if you remember.

He's eight.
And the PeeWee was a gift.
I'm not buying him anything.

And not to make a point of it (AGAIN), does anyone know what strings Epiphone recommends for this guitar?

He's eight - ok.
And the PeeWee was a gift - thanks, I can read and understand.
I'm not buying him anything - apart from a new set of Schallers, a new bridge, an un-cut nut and some new strings, presumably?

And not to make a point of it (AGAIN), does anyone know what strings Epiphone recommends for this guitar?

Good luck.

I missed that so there will not be an issue if the nut is cut correctly.

And with along with the string gauge it doesn't matter what they recommend, it is ultimately up to the player.

BTW I haven't seen any where that Gibson/Epiphone states what is standard on these.

Just bought this for my 6yr old.Looks like it needs new tuners and a bridge.fortunately I have these kicking around an old Badass and an old set of Klusons should work nicely. Maybe a new nut?

Might as well do the thing right.....the easier it is to play the more they will want to play.....if it's out of tune or the action is way to high it will be tough to play and for a child that young they will just toss it to the side and give up.
