PC: TV Yellow Epiphone Les Paul Special MIJ

Hey I was thinking of buying one of these from a friend and was curious how much they're worth? It's the Epiphone Les Paul Special, not the current low-end ones, but the ones that look like the Gibson Les Paul Specials and are MIJ. It has the Gibson headstock shape and is TV yellow. Any help would be appreciated.

It would be a wise purchase, the MIJ epis have 95% of the Gibson correct specs (woods not included) and are exceptionally well built guitars.

I have owned and played several MIJs and have always regretted letting any one of them go.

The big question on this one is whether or not it is a "lacquer" series. Is the finish Poly or Nitrocellulose?

Poly - $5-600-ish
Nitro - $800-ish

Assuming it is in good condtion, that is...

And, like LPJ said, this guitar will be very close to a Gibson Historic LP Special - arguably a better guitar than the regular Gibson USA made Special if it is Nitro finished. The MIJ Epis use long neck tenon construction on their carved top LP's, I'd assume it is the same with the Juniors and Specials...

Hmmm, I'll have to find out whether it is poly or nitro, and I'll be sure and get some pics for you all too. Is there a way to tell by just looking at it if it's poly or nitro? Is nitro extra shiny or something?

you can mark it with your fingernail....

but I don't think that'll go over well.

I think the MIJ Specials is from the lacquer series so most likely it has nitro on it. I'm sure you won't regret getting it.

Its real easy to feel the difference between Poly and Nitro - but almost impossible to describe!

Poly is harder - I can feel the difference between my Poly and Nitro guitars just by wrapping my hand around the neck.

Poly feels like plastic, nitro feels more like rubber.

Or... scratch it with your thumbnail! :laugh2:
