his fingers and the way he emptied his soul into his music had a lot to do with it

Kossoff was an amazing guitar player and his vibrato style made me practice differently.
The Free Live album is one of my favorites. I feel it really shows the band in a raw setting especially Koss. LP straight into a Marshall.

Here's a scratch recording I did of Fire and Water that was influenced greatly from the Free Live album.

Regarding All Right Now I'm pretty sure he did use a Selmer amp on that one.

The Selmer T&B sounds plausible to me. I saw Free live several times - and about four times after ARN was released. Koss never got that tone from either his Marshalls or his HiWatts.
Strange thing though - to me at least - that's not the real Koss's tone. That's to be found in the tone of the chord work in Be My Friend, the solos in The Hunter and Mr Big, the intro chords of Fire & Water, Ride on Pony, and most of all in the driving boogie shuffle of The Highway Song. He nailed those live every time.

Shivers up my ****ing spine just thinking of it :applause:

Ther's a very good "un-messed with" recording of Free doing All Right Now from the Isle of Wight Festival, which is presumably Kossoff's stock touring rig, and it's clearly not the same tone as the studio recording. Maybe it is a Selmer?

Koss is the type of guitarist I have the utmost respect for because he indeed, transferred his nervous system (soul) into his guitar playing and believe me, that les paul was his interpreter. These speedsters /shredders of today don't impress me one iota ...kossoff sure as hell did.

Does anyone have an accurate tab of "all right now"?

Hi guys, I know this ended a while ago but just wanted to clarify Kossoff's rig and share what I know. His basic rig was a Les Paul through a late 60's/early 70's Marshall Super Lead and a few 4x12's, he also used Super Basses (bass version) and 4x12's with bass speakers in. The sound on All Right Now is always said to be a selmer (because he worked in the selmer shop in London) which is probably the most accurate guess, haha. He also used heavy strings .11's/.12's, most of his tone comes from his hands though, Don't buy a Les Paul and a Marshall stack if you can't actually play first! ;)

I got a great rhythm tone for All Right Now with my Standard Faded but then the solo came around the tone was nothing close.

I have always understood that Kossoff was not on that recording - that Rodgers played guitar on that track...

Andy Fraser has always said he was in the studio when Koss recorded it. But it definitely doesn't sound like Kossoff.
