I've been giving this conundrum some thought lately. What is appropriate? What do you wear? Do you not care? One might say over 40 should avoid the issue all-together and just not be on stage (Grace Slick). All black with a black t-shirt seems safe as long as the shirt is minimal on graphics and it doesn't expose a lot or any color. Shoes are kinda tough, though boots of some sort seem to be ok. What about Vans? Hmm...conundrum. Looking like a 19 year old disheveled "I just got out of bed" rebel ain't gonna work no more.

I'm 46.

I usually wear dark pants or jeans, with a plain black T-shirt, even if I'm wearing it inside-out to hide whatever crap is printed on it. Vans.

Daytime outdoor gig may see me in shorts, if it's hot. That is not considered odd or inappropriate in CA.

Converse black sneakers or Doc Marten shoes, dark blue jeans, funky button-up short-sleeved shirt. In the winter, black t-shirt, with funky button-up long-sleeved shirt.

Okay, seriously now...

It's tough, especially after you've put on some weight. I say wear anything that doesn't look like regular street clothes, no matter what style you decide upon. When you play a gig, you're not just musicians but also performers so think of something that looks cool - and try for a consistent style across the band that hopefully you all can agree upon - then go with it. You don't have to go crazy and hit up Hot Topic, but just look rock and roll (however you wish to define it).
