Hey all! Rewiring my 1981 Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop and when I removed the shield plate, I found a number of markings. Of note is the large "NAT" stamp, which I would assume would indicate a natural finish. I bought the guitar off Craigslist and although the original owner had made a number of modifications he didn't mention the finish.

I did some looking on numerous forums and found two other instances where the finishes did not match marking stamps found inside body cavities, and both of the owners did not suspect their guitars were refinished but could not find any

I was wondering if anyone had any info on these stamps, and if it would be possible they could be mismatched without a refin job.

Thanks!

Plenty of times we have seen guitars taken from one stamped batch to fill an order of another colour.

Sometimes a body is marked as natural, but when it goes down the line it becomes clear that the wood is not suitable (blemishes picked up by someone else further down the line etc) so they get painted.
