I have heard of a one piece top on 50's Les Pauls but have never seen one. I bought this 56 refin a while back. Got around to stripping it and yes there is such a thing as a one piece top even before the bursts were introduced. Some great looking wood on this top.

You can see the growth ring lines run the full length of the guitar.

Yep! Cool too. You reshooting it stock? How much does the guitar weigh naked?

Not your standard everyday top, but I like it a lot.

Awesome looking piece of Maple Jim. :thumb: :applause:

I actually saw one ~ 2 weeks ago, it was also a 1956 with the same figure.

If the owner (who is a member here) sees this Thread he might post a pic., if not I'll ask his permission to post.

Looks like Gibson must have made a hand full of these in 1956.

Cheers, Rudi

I'm thinking lemon or maybe like the Hank plank. I don't think I can shoot gold back over this top. It has too much character to hide.

Blistered

It looks like it cleaned up very clean. You'd have to sedate me to keep gold off it. I might do it all gold...

Or Caddy Green. The early shade like '55. It makes a great looking guitar. Whatever you. Do will be nice anyhow!

Oh boy.. As much as I like the top, if it were mine, I'd let it be shown just by pictures.. I'd reshoot gold over this baby

Is the dark area in the center just wet down? If not, will it clean up to match the tone of the rest, and/or will it show if you lemondrop it?

With all of that blistering it might look great in a natural.

Translucent Wine Red. :naughty: The blistering would really "pop" through the finish.

I once (in the 70's) owned a 56 with a one piece top, it was highly flamed right across the wood, was a great player-
