but it seems to me that BP has already spent well over $75000000 on this deal and will be spending even more.

Ooh, $75 mil. Impressive.

Until you consider that the overall damages from this spill will probably approach over $12 billion.

They wanna be treated on the same plane as citizens? Fine. If I hit a telephone pole with my truck and break it, I have to buy the replacement, and I don't get a discount.

Screw 'em. Personal responsibility, right?

This oil spill is Obama's 9-11.

More like his Katrina.....the response from this administration has been about as void as it gets....this event should have had all hands on deck with the Navy in particular on scene ASAP along with anyone else that was needed to shut that well down....this goes beyond politics when something like this happens.....the blame game in Congress was disgusting, and I'm talking about the congressmen here not just the execs.....

There should be no "limit" to responsibility. Whatever it costs is what they should pay.

Exactly. Why should we have to pick up the tab? The argument is usually, "Well, we buy oil and gas from them so we're just as accountable" except that they made a profit just like any other business selling it's wares. Toyota has to pay for the repairs on all of those cars that are screwed up so why should any other company be treated differently?

Did you read the article Donnie? Why was BP drilling in our waters anyway? What responsibilities does the Federal Gov't have in this? They were LEGALLY responsible for insuring the the law was followed and they DIDN'T. The Fed was supposed to have enough fire boom in the gulf for an accident just like this, that rule had been on the books for over a decade. There was NO fireboom anywhere on the gulf. BP screwed up, Transocean screwed up, Haliburton might have...but the Federal Gov't screwed up BIGTIME as well...BP is not an American company btw.

I think all the numbers being thrown around are just that, numbers....they don't mean anything at this point. The only thing that matters is getting that well capped and capped quickly....no one knows what the true number in losses is going to be and all the so called experts are just running around seeing which talking head show they can collect a fee from for spouting off....

Let's find some solutions here before we start arguing about who has to pay what as that isn't even registering quite yet......I have problems with both corporate and government in this case....

And with that, Hell has officially frozen over. :laugh2:

Why would you say that? I have always believed every person or entity is responsible for their actions. I had the same principles when I was a registered Demo as I have now as a registered Republican.

So, BP gets off paying for a fraction of the damage they cause, and that's okay?

OTOH, I see your argument. You let BP skate, and get to rail against the government. Win-win! :laugh2::laugh2:

I'm not accusing you of hypocrisy, KP.

I said that because we actually agree on something. :)

I think BP should be sued into bankruptcy, their assets should be sold to pay for the cost of this mess, and the men responsible for the decision to go forward with drilling in spite of the fact that they knew they had a defective BOP, with untested mods, in spite of the fact that they didn't have a plan in place to handle an emergency, in spite of the fact that they weren't following standard operating procedures and their track record of failure to follow the law on shore and off...those men should be publicly flogged, sued personally and then banished to pedophile island.

Having said that, Senator Menendez is grandstanding with his bill. Care should be taken by the congress when making new laws that might make things worse. Nobody followed the existing laws and regulations, why would I expect that new laws and regulations would make things better?

Blame for this deal goes beyond BP. Heads should roll wherever guilt can be established. But, my part of the country DEPENDS on oil & gas, we like to work just like the rest of you. The asshats in Congress shouldn't be allowed to ruin the industry and chase jobs away from America.

And this is different from any other day in Congress, on both sides of the aisle, how? :naughty:

The day that someone in Congress isn't grandstanding is a day when the building's empty.

I thought Nashville was his Katrina... though the media is silent.

Of course it is. If Sean Penn doesn't weigh in, it's not a 'real' tragedy these days. And I bet anything that people in Nashville won't be living in FEMA trailers 5 years later.

I am fairly confident that all businesses and homes will be rebuilt long before 5 years have passed. Oh yeah, Sean Penn can kiss my lily white ass!

I am too. Just the first sentence, that is.
