All dads can be dicks, most of the time it's because they have to be. You don't see it now or understand why, but one day you'll understand most of the reasons why your dad acted like he did. For those times you can't explain it, remember that they aren't perfect and do make mistakes too.

But from your own story here, you brought anything you get on yourself. Don't go anywhere looking for sympathy unless you're prepared to get the opposite.

you probably wont even have to say that you fucked up. he will most likely be touched and surprised at the fact that his son is coming to have a conversation with him instead of being a hormonal tornado of teenage rage. believe me, i was angry like you are when i was a kid too.. its tough to deal with from both sides. so unless there is some other issue here like hes a raging drunk who beats the shit out of you on a regular basis, i think you should just cut your dad some slack.

my dad was a REAL ass. taught me all kinds of stuff that hurt me in the end and wasn't good for me. however he did manage to teach me a few good things too. like if it ain't yours, don't do shit to it without permission. it isn't that you don't know anything about guitars, and it isn't that you were wrong that the guitar needed the sanding. it is that it was not yours to decide. simple as that. if you can't understand that then something is wrong buddy.
